Cardinals Host No. 8 Virginia and Miami This Week

The eighth-ranked Cavaliers visit Lynn Stadium on Thursday night while the Miami Hurricanes will face the Cardinals on Sunday afternoon
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Facing their second consecutive top-10 opponent, the University of Louisville women's soccer team (9-2, 3-1 ACC) welcomes No. 8 Virginia to Lynn Stadium on Thursday evening at 7 p.m. The Cardinals will then host Miami on Sunday at noon to cap off the weekend of ACC action.
 
The duo of Brooklynn Rivers and Maisie Whitsett lead the Cardinals on the offensive end. Rivers has scored seven goals and tallied five assists for 19 points on the season, while Whitsett follows just behind with eight goals and two assists for 18 points.
 
Redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Gabby Kouzelos has started all 11 contests for the Cardinals, registering 19 saves and a goals against average of 1.01.
 
Head coach Karen Ferguson-Dayes is in her 19th season with the Cardinals. She has led Louisville to four NCAA tournament appearances, including a Sweet 16 appearance in 2011.
 
SCOUTING VIRGINIA
Virginia (9-2, 2-2) is coming off a 5-1 rout of Wake Forest last weekend. The Cavaliers went undefeated in nonconference action before falling to Clemson 1-0 in their ACC opener. Just days later, the Cavaliers picked up a 2-1 win over Duke before falling to Virginia Tech 1-0.
 
The Cavaliers top the ACC standings in goals, averaging 2.636 per match. The offense is led by Rebecca Jarrett and Betsy Brandon, who have each recorded five and four goals respectively. Taryn Torres has also been integral on the offensive end, adding two goals and four assists on the season.
 
Sophomore goalkeeper Laurel Ivory has started all but one of the Cavaliers' 11 matches, accumulating 21 saves with a goals against average of 0.53.
 
Head coach Steve Swanson is in his 17th season at the helm of the Virginia women's soccer team. He has led his teams to seven conference championships, 22 NCAA tournaments and 26 consecutive winning seasons.
 
SERIES HISTORY
Thursday's match marks the fifth meeting between the Cardinals and the Cavaliers. Virginia has won four straight over Louisville, with the last match resulting in a 1-0 loss at Virginia on Oct. 8, 2017.
 
SCOUTING MIAMI
The Hurricanes (4-6-2, 1-3) notched their first conference victory last Saturday, shutting out Syracuse 1-0. Freshman Gudrun Haralz, Miami's leading scorer, found the back of the net in the 33rd minute to lift the Hurricanes to victory.
 
On offense, Haralz has four goals and two assists for 10 points through 12 matches. Jamie Brunworth, Michelle Giamportone and Mallory Olssen have each tallied two goals apiece.
 
In goal, Phallon Tullis-Joyce has collected 41 saves with a goals against average of 1.37.
 
Sarah Barnes is in her first season as the head coach of the Hurricanes, arriving in Miami after six seasons as the head coach of George Washington University. She finished with a 60-41-14 mark at George Washington and was named the 2015 Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year.
