Louisville wraps up stellar regular season with the Hokies
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Looking to close out the regular season on a high note, the University of Louisville women's soccer team welcomes Virginia Tech to Lynn Stadium on Thursday at 7 p.m.
The Cardinals (12-4, 6-3 ACC) return home after three straight matches on the road. Most recently, Louisville defeated NC State 2-1 with a pair of goals by Maisie Whitsett and Emina Ekic and cemented their spot in the ACC Tournament.
Junior forward Brooklynn Rivers leads the Cardinals' offense with eight goals and six assists for 22 points. Whitsett is Louisville's top goal-scorer with nine on the season and has also added two assists for 20 points. With goals in each of the Cardinals' last two games, Ekic rounds out the leading-scorers with six goals.
Redshirt sophomore Gabby Kouzelos has started all 16 matches in goal for the Cardinals, registering 29 saves and a goals against average of 0.94. Senior Gabrielle Vincent anchors the Cardinals' defense at centerback.
Head coach Karen Ferguson-Dayes is in her 19th season with the Cardinals. She has led Louisville to four NCAA tournament appearances, including a Sweet 16 appearance in 2011.
SCOUTING VIRGINIA TECH
The Hokies (8-6-3, 4-5) have dropped four of their last five matches, three of which were played against ACC opponents ranked in the top-25. In their latest outing, they fell 3-1 to Clemson at home.
Freshman forward Karlie Johnson leads Virginia Tech on offense with six goals. Fellow freshman Emily Gray has tallied two goals and four assists for eight points on the season. Kelsey Irwin is also a mainstay for the Hokies with three goals and one assist.
In goal, junior Mandy McGlynn has started all 17 games, recording 64 saves and a goals against average of 1.02.
Head coach Charles Adair is in his eighth season at the helm of the Virginia Tech women's soccer program. He entered the year as the all-time wins leader in program history with a 95-40-15 overall record and has led the team to eight NCAA Tournament bids.
