Volleyball Sweeps Previously Unbeaten UC Irvine in Vegas

Melanie McHenry had 10 kills and four blocks to lead the University of Louisville to a 25-20, 25-17, 25-20 sweep of previously unbeaten UC Irvine Friday afternoon at the UNLV Challenge in Las Vegas.

UofL (3-3) hit .373 with 8 blocks and 31 digs, with Tess Clark adding eight kills and two blocks and Amanda Green pitching in seven kills. UCI (6-1) had 10 kills from Idara Akpakpa and two aces from Haley DeSales.

The Cards used .500 hitting and had six blocks in the first set en route to a 25-20 win. After being tied at 11, UofL gained some breathing room with a 5-0 run. UCI scrambled back to come within one at 18-17 on an ace by DeSales. The Cards scored six of the last seven points for the win. Melanie McHenry and Jasmine Bennett each had four kills in the set to lead the Cardinal offense.

In the second set, UofL hit .253 as the Anteaters struggled with the Cardinal block, hitting just .158 in the set. Louisville took its biggest lead at 20-12 and then rolled to the 25-17 win.

The Cardinals took an early lead in the third set, going 13-9 on a kill by Melanie McHenry. UCI got within three at 19-16 on an ace by Bria Beale but the Cardinals rolled to the 25-21 win.

The Cards face Weber State at 8 p.m. ET. The Wildcats fell 3-2 to host UNLV in the first match of the day.
