Dorcas Wasike leads Louisville women with personal-best 5K time
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – With a personal-best time in the women's 5K, sophomore Dorcas Wasike highlighted the day for the University of Louisville men's and women's cross-country teams at the Greater Louisville Cross Country Classic Saturday morning at E.P. "Tom" Sawyer State Park.
Wasike posted a time of 16:56.75, placing her 14th overall and first among Louisville runners in the opening gold race. Sophomore Kassidy Manning and senior Mia Ross also set new personal records, finishing 27th (17:13.40) and 34th (17:18.10) respectively. In the team results, the Cardinals took seventh place with 269 points, as No. 13 Boise State led the way with 74.
"Our women's squad was able to go out and beat some very good visiting teams today," said coach Dale Cowper. "The group has made strong progress over the last three weeks and saw big personal best efforts from Wasike, Manning and Ross today. This team can make a strong run into the post-season later this fall."
In the later women's blue 5K, sophomore Lauren Radenhausen led the Cardinals with a personal-best time of 18:55.35, good enough for a 14th place finish. Teammates Michelle Appel, Hannah Herd and Britney Hansen also placed in the event top 40. With 154 points, the Cardinals finished sixth overall, with South Alabama taking the competition.
Earlier in the men's 8K gold race, redshirt freshman Albert Kosgei turned in the Cardinals' best time with a personal-best 24:59.60. Junior Daniel Fleace gave Louisville its second-best time with a mark of 25:09.48. Top-ranked Northern Arizona grabbed the team title with 19 points, while the Cardinals placed 21st with 562 points.
"Our men's team result was disappointing today," said coach Cowper. "The effort was there, but we do a better job of following the race plan as the season develops."
The Cardinals will return to Sawyer State Park in two weeks for the Pre-National Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 14. The site will also host the ACC Championships and NCAA Division I Championships.
