Freshman Emina Ekic scores the game-winner for the Cards
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Behind an impressive offensive performance from Emina Ekic, the University of Louisville women's soccer team earned their first ACC win of the season with a 1-0 victory over the Miami Hurricanes. The Cardinals improve to 7-4-0 overall and 1-2-0 in ACC play, while the Hurricanes drop to 4-4-0 and 0-2-0 in ACC action.
"I think we played well," said head coach Karen Ferguson-Dayes. "Something that we've struggled with is crossing, finishing and organizing our runs in the box and today we did well with that."
The Cardinals set the tone offensively in the first half, outshooting the Hurricanes 9-3. Louisville's best scoring opportunity came in the 30th minute as Brooklynn Rivers fired up a shot that sailed just high of the net. Despite the strong offensive pressure from the Cardinals, both teams remained scoreless through the half.
Ekic paced Louisville's offense with four shots, while Rivers added two shots of her own. The Cardinals also held a 5-2 corner kick advantage over the Hurricanes in the first half.
Miami intensified their offensive pressure to start the second half, earning two corners within the span of 30 seconds. Miami was unable to capitalize, as Gabby Kouzelos made a huge save to keep the Hurricanes off the board.
Over the next 25 minutes of the match, the Cardinals continued to ramp up their offensive pressure, but were unable to find a scoring opportunity. However, in the 82nd minute Ekic blasted a remarkable shot that sailed right over the goalkeeper and into the back of the net, giving the Cardinals a 1-0 lead.
Miami picked up the pressure in the final minutes of the match, but the Cardinals' staunch defensive efforts kept the Hurricanes from scoring an equalizer as the clock expired.
The Cardinals finished the match with a 16-7 shot advantage and edged the Hurricanes 7-4 in corner kicks. Ekic scored the lone goal of the match and led all players with five shots. Mollie Rouse finished the match with three shots for the Cardinals, while Kouzelos earned two saves on the afternoon.
Louisville will be back in action at Lynn Stadium on Friday, Sept. 29 for a matchup against the No. 4 Duke Blue Devils. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
