Dorcas Wasike and Albert Kosgei finish first in opening races
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – In the opening meet of the year, the University of Louisville women's cross country team prevailed against the University of Tennessee at the Tennessee Dual at the Cherokee Farm Cross Country Course. Earlier in the men's race, the men's team dropped the race to the Volunteers.
Sophomore Dorcas Wasike took first in the women's 5K, while freshman Albert Kosgei made a strong debut, finishing first in the men's 4-mile race.
"Today was a strong opener to our season on a meticulously maintained course in Knoxville," said head coach Dale Cowper. "Albert and Dorcas were each able to pick up the individual titles, which is always a nice confidence builder in the early season."
The 28th-nationally ranked women's team decisively beat the Volunteers, 18-41, as they placed six in the top seven. Top finisher Wasike finished with a time of 17:26.07, while teammate Aurilla Wilson came in second with a personal-best time of 17:31.01. Following a Tennessee runner in third place, junior Kassidy Manning (17:36.79), senior Mia Ross (17:49.05), junior Caroline Gosser (17:58.30) and junior Abigail Wright (personal-best 18:09.76) rounded out the top seven positions.
"Our women could have done a better job of working as a pack, but the overall result is satisfying," said coach Cowper. "This group can grow into a strong team by October."
Kosgei came in first as he posted a time of 20:17.42. He was joined in the top 10 by teammates Daniel Fleace, who finished seventh with a time of 20:54.27, and Julien Magallanes, who finished eighth with a time of 21:01.52. In the overall race, Louisville fell, 22-35.
Freshmen Cameron Stephens and Ben Ewert premiered strongly, finishing 11th at 21:23.19 and 12th at 21:29.67 respectively. Senior Jonathan Reynolds opened the year with a 14th-place finish and a time of 21:47.08. Elsewhere in the top 20, freshmen Alex McClarty finished 17th with a time of 22:17.03, while fellow rookie Alex Lynch clocked in at 23:02.24, finishing 20th overall.
"Our men's squad fell short of the team victory, but we can draw on several positives from this morning's 4-mile race," said coach Cowper.
Four addition women's runners finished in the top 20, with sophomore Lauren Radenhausen finishing 15th with a time of 19:16.74 and fellow second-year Michelle Appel following up in 16th place with a personal-best time of 19:20.09. Sophomores Hannah Herd and Britney Hansen rounded out the top 20 with times of 19:46.08 and 19:50.39.
The Cardinals cross country team will next race on Saturday, Sept. 9 at the John McNichols Invitational in Terre Haute, Ind.
