The Cardinals open the 2017 campaign with a dual race against the Volunteers.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville men's and women's cross country teams are set to open the 2017 season on Saturday, Sept. 2 as they face off against the University of Tennessee in the Tennessee Dual at the Cherokee Farm Cross Country Course in Knoxville, Tenn.
The men's race will begin at 9 a.m., followed by the women's race at 9:45 a.m.
The men's squad returns five runners from last year's team, but the roster will look quite different with the addition of six freshmen. The newcomers will be tasked with filling the losses of 2016 All-American Edwin Kibichiy and all-region honoree Calvin Chemoiywo. The Cardinals were voted seventh in the ACC Preseason Coaches' Poll.
The women's team, ranked second in the USTFCCCA Southeast Region rankings and 28th nationally, brings back six runners from last year's NCAA Southeast Region runner-up team. In the ACC Preseason Poll, Louisville was pegged for a fifth-place finish. The squad welcomes two new members in freshman Madison Kiser and University of Dayton transfer Kassidy Manning.
Last season, the Cardinals advanced to the NCAA Championship for the first time in school history, following the strong showing at Regionals and a fourth-place finish at the ACC Championship. Sophomore Dorcas Wasike was a strong performer in her rookie campaign, posting four top ten finishes, including a personal best time of 20:14.7 in the ACC Championship, earning her All-ACC accolades. In total, eight Cardinal runners posted personal best times in the conference meet.
The Cardinals will close the season with four home events in their final five outings, including the ACC and NCAA Championship meets at E.P. Tom Sawyer Park.
