Comerford and Claverie Swim in Day 5 World Championships Prelims

Comerford qualifies fifth in a star-studded field
University of Louisville swimmers Mallory Comerford and Carlos Claverie were in the water this morning for Day 5 of the 2017 FINA World Swimming Championships in Budapest.

 American record holder Mallory Comerford qualified fifth in 53.42 to earn a berth in this evening's semi-finals.  World record holder Sarah Sjostrom of Sweden posted a 53.01 to qualify first.  Defending 50-meter freestyle Olympic gold medallist   Pernille Blume of Denmark put up a time of 53.13 to be seeded second. Defending Olympic co-gold medallists Simone Manuel and Canadian Penny Oleksiak touched third and fourth in 53.17 and 53.18 respectively to set up what should be a blazing fast semi.

Louisville's Carlos Claverie of Venezuela posted a time of  2:11.71 to finish 19th in the 200 breast. The event's top qualifier was Russian Anton Chupkov, who boarded a 2:08.23, followed by Great Britain's Ross Murdoch, who went 2:08.98.
