Women Stand at 12th in USTFCCCA Program of the Year Standings
June 13, 2017 | Cross Country, Track & Field
Women's Cross Country and Indoor Track and Field led the Cardinals with historic seasons
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - After the completion of the 2017 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championship, the USTFCCCA announced the program of the year standings on Tuesday, June 13. The University of Louisville women were ranked 12th with 84.5 points, which is a combination of the team's 2016 NCAA Cross Country finish and the 2017 NCAA Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field finish. Louisville is the only ACC team in the standings, which ranked the top 19 programs.Â
The USTFCCA Program of the Year honors the institution that has achieved the most success in each academic year (spanning the cross country, indoor track & field, and outdoor track & field seasons) based on the institution's finish at the NCAA Championships.
In order to be eligible for the award, teams must qualify for each of the NCAA Championships. Scoring is based on the team's finish at each NCAA Championship in cross country, indoor track & field, and outdoor track & field (i.e. 1st = 1 point, 2nd = 2 points, 31st = 31 points) with the lowest total score for all three championships combined determining the award recipient. Ties among schools split points for positions taken.
The University of Louisville women's cross country team made school history, earning their first NCAA Championship appearance in the fall, finishing 31st. The Cardinals finished second at the NCAA Southeast Regional to earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Championship. The finish at the southeast regional was the best finish in school history.  Â
The University of Louisville women's indoor track and field team also made school history, finishing tied for 18th at the NCAA Championships on Saturday. Redshirt senior Dolly Nyemah repeated as NCAA Runner-Up in the weight throw to earn first team All-American honors. Emmonnie Henderson earned first team All-American honors after finishing sixth in the women's shot put while Holly Hankenson earned second team All-American honors in the pentathlon. All three helped the Cardinals score 11 points for the school record finish.
Last weekend the women finished 32nd at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. Henderson finished as the NCAA Runner-Up in the shot put. She also earned second team All-American honors in the discus. Hankenson was the first multi-event athlete to advance to the outdoor championship for the Cardinals. She earned honorable mention All-American honors in the heptathlon.Â
