Cardinals fall in the first round of the NCAA Tournament
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.—The Louisville lacrosse team fell 12-6 to James Madison on Friday night in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Hannah Koloski led the Cardinals in her final game with three goals.
"I am super proud of our seniors and what they brought today," said head coach Kellie Young. "They left their hearts on the field and unfortunately the other 23 players did not. The defense played out of their minds to start the game and the attack was playing scared. Our attack then stepped it up in the last eight minutes but you have to play 60 minutes. I am disappointed right now and embarrassed that Louisville lacrosse did not play the level that we played in the ACC Tournament. We will figure it out and attack next year."
The Cardinal defense came out strong, forcing a turnover then Koloski put the Cardinals on the board first, scoring on a free position shot at the 28:09 mark. JMU answered with a goal at the 26:32 mark to knot it up at 1-1.
The Cardinals then went on a 2-0 run to take a 3-1 lead. Jillian Balog scores on a free position shot at the 19:04 mark and Siverson scored at the 17:22 mark with a free position goal.
James Madison responded with a 5-0 run to take a 6-3 lead with 3:12 left in the first half.
Koloski got free of the double team and stopped the Dukes' scoring run at the 1:25 mark to cut the lead to 6-4. She had shot as the clock was winding down but it was saved.
The Cardinals had the first shot of the second half, but Elise Koehl's shot was collected by the goalie. James Madison scored first in the second half to take a 7-4 lead. The Dukes gained the next possession but Brittany Read had three big saves to give the Cards the ball back.
Elise Koehl scored for the Cardinals at the 19:02 mark, putting the shot at the feet of the goalie. Koloski scored her third goal of the game at the 15:48 mark to get the Cardinals within one (7-6).
The Dukes then responded with a 5-0 run to take a 12-6 lead with 2:49 left in the first half. The Cardinals were unable to counter, falling to James Madison.
JMU held a 12-8 advantage on the draw, including an 8-3 advantage in the first half. The Dukes also held a 20-13 advantage in ground balls. James Madison also finished with a 25-16 advantage in shots.
Read finished with eight saves while JMU's Emily Poelma finished with six saves.
