Louisville women finish first day with a solid start
ATLANTA, Ga. – The University of Louisville women's track and field team stands in third place with 15 points after the first day of competition at the ACC Championships on Friday. The Louisville men's team is tied for eighth with four points after scoring three events of 21.
"Our women's team was able to get off to a strong start today," said head coach Dale Cowper. "Dolly and Cyerra competed at a very high level in the women's hammer picking up eight big team points to get things rolling for us. I believe Dolly's throw is the third best in our program's history."
Scoring the first points of the day were Dolly Nyemah and Cyerra Cassell in the women's hammer throw. Nyemah threw a personal best of 61.99m (203-4) to finish fourth. Cassell finished sixth with a throw of 57.05m (187-2).
After the first day of competition in the multi-events, Holly Hankenson stands in second place with 3263 points while Linda Mutter is in seventh place with 3045 points. Eric Fox stands in fifth place with 3709 points. Hankenson won the shot put and the 200 meters on the first day while Mutter finished second in the shot put and fourth in the high jump. Fox finished third in the high jump and fourth in the shot put.
"Holly Hankenson and Linda Mutter both established strong positions during day one of the heptathlon and we'll need big finishes from them tomorrow as they finish the event out," said Cowper. "Eric Fox had a solid opening day in the men's decathlon and is positioned to challenge for a podium finish tomorrow."
Morgan Zacharias also scored points for the Cardinals in the pole vault. The sophomore finished fourth, clearing 4.03m (13-2 ½).
"Morgan Zacharias was on her game mentally today," Cowper said. "She really did a great job of working through a rough start in the women's pole vault to finish fourth."
In the 10,000 meters, Caroline Gosser led the women with a seventh place finish. Gosser finished with a time of 35:52.94. Chemoiywo finished seventh on the men's side with a time of 29:38.67.
"Caroline Gosser finished the day for our women's team with two big team points from a well-executed seventh place finish in the 10,000 meters," said Cowper. "Calvin was also able to scored two points on the men's side with a seventh place finish."
Darrius Lopez also scored two points for the men. Lopez finished seventh in the men's hammer with a season best mark of 58.99 (193-6).

"Raven Grant was able to overcome a difficult outside lane draw in the 200 meters to advance to the final on Sunday," said Cowper. "She was terrific coming off the turn and we're excited to see what she can do in the final. Greater Atlanta native Martice Moore was able to run a relaxed qualifying race in the 400 meter hurdles while earning a strong position for Saturday's final."
The Cardinals will continue competition tomorrow with the multi-events beginning at 11:00 a.m.
