Wash, Henderson and Kibichiy win titles for the Cardinals on the second day of action
ATLANTA, Ga. – The University of Louisville women's track and field team stands in fourth place with 47 points after 9 of 21 events were scored on Saturday at the ACC Championships. The men moved up to fifth place with 23 points after scoring 8 of 21 events. The second day of competition was a solid day for both teams, finishing with three ACC titles, a new school record and seven athletes earning All-ACC honors.
"We were able to put quality points on the board today for both squads," said head coach Dale Cowper. "Eric, Holly, and Linda came through with outstanding contributions from the multi-events and it was great to see Raven and Martice both advance to the finals tomorrow. Edwin, Emmonnie, and Bre'Yana led the way by picking up ACC titles in the steeplechase, shot put, and long jump, respectively. Edwin and Emmonnie were each able to take control from start to finish. Bre'Yana waited until the fifth round to take the lead and it was awesome to watch! She has been on the hunt for an ACC title the last few years and today she able to seize the moment and capture one."
Eric Fox earned first team All-ACC honors after finishing third in the men's decathlon with 7,176 points. Fox won the pole vault and finished fourth in the 1500m to move into third place at the end of the day. Holly Hankenson earned second team All-ACC honors, finishing fourth in the women's heptathlon with 5,339 points. Hankenson won the 800 meters on the final day of competition. Linda Mutter also earned second team All-ACC honors, finishing sixth with 5,200 points. Mutter's best finish of the day was third place in the javelin throw.
Senior Bre'Yana Wash was the first of three athletes to earn an ACC title. Wash won the long jump in the fifth round with a mark of 6.23m (20-5 ¼ ).
"I was suppose to graduate and walk across the stage today," said Wash. "But God, he had a bigger plan for me that I couldn't fully see. I am thankful for the team he gave me that helped me get it done, and I'll cherish the victory forever."
Emmonnie Henderson was the second Cardinals to win a title. She won her third straight ACC Outdoor shot put title. Henderson won with a mark of 17.57m (57-7 ¾ ).
"I'm grateful to have been afforded the ability and resources to experience the ACC Championships for three years, bringing home the gold each time in the shot put," said Henderson. "I did not get the mark I desired, but there is more to come in future weeks."
Edwin Kibichiy wrapped up the evening with a third ACC title for the Cardinals. Like Henderson, Kibichiy won his third straight ACC title in the 3,000 meter steeplechase. He won the event with a time of 8:45.70.
"I'm really thankful and grateful for the opportunity to compete at the ACC Championship tonight," said Kibichiy. "To be able to win three ACC titles and a fourth straight conference title takes a lot of sacrifices, hard work and dedication. Coach Jenna and coach Walker have not only made me a great athlete but also a better man. Hearing my teammates cheer at every corner of the track tonight gave me a lot energy and excitement. I'm looking forward to winning an NCAA title for the Cardinals this season."
Also in the women's steeplechase, senior Claire Noser set a new school record. Noser earned second team All-ACC honors, finishing fifth with a personal best time of 10:15.98. She broke the previous school record of 10:16.35 set by Benadate Cheruiyot at the 2015 ACC Championship.
"Claire Noser was simply outstanding in the steeplechase today," said Cowper. "The growth she has shown over her four years on campus is a testament to her dedication, drive, and work ethic. As she graduates with an outstanding nursing degree, now she also owns the school record in the women's steeplechase."
The Cardinals will wrap up the final day of competition on Sunday. The day begins at 2:00 p.m. with the men's high jump, women's triple jump and men's discus. Running events are slated to begin at 5:03 p.m.
