Cardinals earn one title while nine athletes earn All-ACC honors on the final day
ATLANTA, Ga. – The University of Louisville men's track and field team finished fifth at the ACC Outdoor Championship with a total of 64 points while the women finished sixth with a total of 62 points. Both teams scored the most points since joining the ACC three years ago. The men recorded their best finish in the ACC while the women tie their best finish. Louisville finished with an ACC title in the men's high jump and nine athletes finish with All-ACC honors on Sunday.
"We finished things out strong on both sides today," said head coach Dale Cowper. "I'm extremely proud of the way each squad competed this weekend and I look forward to the NCAA Prelims in two weeks. Jerin Allen led the way for us today by picking up the men's high jump title. He predicted to me this morning and needless to say we were excited to see him back up his words this afternoon. Javen Reeves was also able to pick up All-ACC first team honors in the men's high jump. Both of these guys have a great chance to compete for All-American honors as the season continues."
The men's high jump was the highlight of the day, with two Cardinals earning a spot on the podium. Jerin Allen won his first ACC title after winning a jump off with Florida State's Ed'Ricus Williams. Teammate Javen Reeves finished third. Both Allen and Reeves finished with a season best mark of 2.15m (7- ½).
"It was a hard fought battle for the win," said Allen. "The competition was very tough but luckily my coaches and teammates had my back during the intense jump off. I am forever thankful to the coaching staff for their belief in me and bringing me here to win a championship for this program."
On the track, Martice Moore and Raven Grant both earned All-ACC honors in two events. Moore started the day with a third place finish in the men's 110 meter hurdles. Moore finished with a time of 14.28 to earn first team All-ACC honors. He followed that up with a sixth place finish in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 51.37, earning second team All-ACC honors.
"Martice Moore did a great job of fighting through both hurdle races this weekend," Cowper said. "To pick up a combined nine points in open events."
Grant finished sixth in the 100 meters with a time of 11.56. She followed that up with a sixth place finish in the 200 meters with a time of 23.65. The sophomore earned second team All-ACC honors in both events.
"On the women's side, Raven Grant battled an outstanding group of short sprinters to pick up All-ACC second team honors in both the 100 meters and the 200 meters," Cowper said. "She has a few things to clean up in racing, but can certainly be in contention to advance at the NCAA Prelims."
In the field events, Emmonnie Henderson earned first team All-ACC honors in the discus. She finished with a season best throw of 52.79m (173-2) to earn first team honors in the discus for the third straight year.
"Emmonnie was able to lead three Cardinals into the women's discus final and we came out of the event with six big points," Cowper said.
Freshman John Kolb finished sixth in the men's discus. He earned second team All-ACC honors with a mark of 53.13m (174-3).
"John Kolb was able to establish himself as the top performing freshmen in our program by earning All-ACC second team honors in the discus," said Cowper. "He was pretty tight as the competing started but he did a great job of working through his nerves to finish sixth overall."
The Cardinals will have a week off from competition to prepare for the NCAA Preliminaries on May 25-27 in Lexington, Ky.
"I am grateful for a tremendous coaching staff and all of the support staff that have pitched in to help us earn our highest point totals yet at an ACC Championship," said Cowper. "Our goal is to get into contention for an ACC title and we are working closer to that."
