Szydlowski delivers her third homer of the season, but Cards fall short 5-2
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The University of Louisville softball team fell 5-2 to North Carolina State in the quarterfinals of the ACC Championship Thursday evening at North Carolina's Anderson Stadium.
Â
NC State (18-37) jumped to a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Alyssa Compton doubled and moved to third on a hit by Haylee Kobziak to put runners on the corners for Jessica Moore who sent an RBI hit to left field where a diving Jordan McNary dove, but could not come up with the catch.
Â
The Wolfpack added another run in the third. Tyler Ross was hit by a pitch, took second on Molly Hutchison's sacrifice bunt, stole third and scored on Compton's single to push the lead to 2-0.
Â
The Cardinals got a run back in the home half of third when McNary reached on a fielder's choice and sprinted around to third on senior Morgan Meyer's sacrifice bunt. An error on the play saw McNary safe at the plate to cut the lead in half.
Â
NC State capitalized on five hits and an error to score three runs in the fifth. Hutchison led off with a single and scored on Cheyenne Balzer's double. An error allowed Compton to reach and back-to-back RBI hits by Moore and Molly Martin gave the Wolfpack a 5-1 lead.
Â
Junior Alison Szydlowski led off the home half of the fifth with a shot over the centerfield fence for her third homer of the season to bring the score to 5-2, but the Cards would get no closer.
Â
Megan Hensley (9-9) took the loss, surrendering four runs, three earned, on nine hits and striking out two in four innings. Becker allowed one earned run on five hits with one strikeout in three innings of relief. Nicole Pufahl went 2-for-3 to pace the Cards offensively.
Â
Peyton Silverman (13-23) picked up the win after giving up two runs, one earned, on six hits and striking out three in a complete game effort. Moore finished the game with three hits and two RBIs to lead the Wolfpack at the plate.
Â
"I felt like our team didn't play defense towards the end and we were trying to hit it out of the park instead of doing what we did last weekend, which was hit the shots that we needed to hit, just keep the ball in their outfield, and we didn't do that well," said UofL head coach Sandy Pearsall.
