Cards post 20-win mark for 10th time in program history
The University of Louisville men's tennis team ended the 2017 regular season on April 23 with a 7-0 home victory over IUPUI to increase its record to 20-8. With the win, the Cardinals secured their third 20-win season in the last four years and marked in program history.
"I credit this group of players who bought in my idea of the 'Redeem Team,'" said UofL head coach Rex Ecarma. "I also want to credit Coach Jakob Gustafsson, volunteer coach Patrick Weant and Senior Associate AD John Carns who believed in the vision and in these players. Probably one of the most gratifying things is when your coaching
colleagues in the ACC compliment is on the dramatic turnaround."
The Cardinals' 20-8 record and 6-6 ACC tally is especially impressive considering that the team closed out the 2016 regular season with a 14-16 overall record and a 1-11 mark in ACC play. Louisville has made great strides with a team that includes one senior, three juniors and seven underclassmen. The Cards have appeared in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association team rankings for the past eight weeks, reaching as high as No. 31.
Additionally, sophomore Christopher Morin-Kougoucheff has been in the last three singles rankings periods while the pair of senior Sean Donohue and freshman Parker Wynn has reached as high as No. 22 in the doubles rankings this season.
"This accomplishment is one of the best turnaround stories in college tennis this year," said Ecarma. "And to do it in America's most prestigious conference as well. They took a program that finished 14-16 in the regular season in 2016 and turned it around to a 20-8 season. As well as second from the last in the ACCs in 2016 to being in the top five the majority of the season
