
Men's Swimming Moves into Top Ten after Day 3 at NCAAs

Cards have full day tomorrow in final day of racing
The University of Louisville men's swimming team moved into the top ten after three days of racing at the 2017 Men's NCAA Championships Friday evening at the IU Natatorium on the campus of IUPUI.

The Cardinals moved up to tenth10th place with 102.5 points. Texas retains the lead with 391.5 points followed by Cal (253), Florida, NC State (196), Indiana (189.5), Stanford (160), USC (142.5), Georgia 141, and Missouri (135.5) round out the top ten.

"You can't ever take anything for granted at the NCAAs. We capitalized on a few opportunities this morning and we will go into tomorrow with a fighting chance to have one of the best NCAA finishes in school history. I am proud of our guys," said Arthur Albiero, UofL head coach.

In the first event of the evening, Etay Gurevich posted a 3:43.27 to finish fifth in the B-final of the 400 IM to earn honorable mention All-American honors. The event was won by Georgia's Chase Kalisz who set an American, NCAA and U.S. Open record of 3:33.42 and became the fastest man all-time by 2.4 seconds.

For the Cardinals, Josh Quallen posted a 46.09, to tie for sixth in B-final of 100 fly and make honorable mention All American honors. Â Olympian Caeleb Dressel of Florida set the American, NCAA and U.S. Open records with a time of 43.58, becoming just the second man ever under 44 seconds.

In the 100 breaststroke, Carlos Claverie posted a 52.39 in the B-final of the 100-breaststroke for the Cardinals for honorable mention All American kudos. Â The event was won by Texas' Will Licon, who clocked a 50.68 to rank second all-time fastest in the event.Â

NCAA defending champion Townley Haas of Texas defended his title in the 200 free with a time of 1:30.65 for the win.  For the Cardinals, Trevor Carroll went 1:33.92 in the 200 freestyle B-final to earn honorable mention All American honors.

California's Ryan Murphy completed his first four-peat, winning his fourth-straight NCAA title in the event with a 43.99. For the Cardinal's Grigory Tarasevich went 45.22 in the A-final of the 100 backstroke to finish 7th.

 The 200 medley relay team posted a 1:24.06 for 8th with splits from Tarasevich (21.38), Claverie (23.59), Quallen (20.15), Carroll (18.94).  Texas set an NCAA record with a time of 1:21.54 for the gold medal.
