
Softball Falls Short Against No. 21 California 5-2

Cards will face Cal State Fullerton Saturday night at 10:30 p.m.
CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. – The University of Louisville softball team fell 5-2 to No. 21 California (10-1)at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic Saturday.  The Cards will wrap up the tournament against Cal State Fullerton Saturday at 10:30 p.m.(EST).
The Cardinals (7-6) totaled seven hits to California's six, but three errors in the third inning produced five unearned runs for the Bears.
After two scoreless innings, Cal's Bradie Fillmore drew a leadoff walk. Back-to-back errors allowed and Lindsay Rood and Khala Taylor to load the bases. Another miscue on Kylie Reed's grounder sent Fillmore home. Jazmyn Jackson's groundout plated Taylor. Kobie Pettis followed with an RBI double and Vanessa Alvarez's two-run double brought the score to 5-0.
Louisville got two runs back in the home half of the third when sophomore Lillie Goetz connected on a one-out double, moved to third on senior Jordan McNary's bunt single and crossed the plate on senior Maryssa Becker's fielder's choice. Sophomore Megan Hensley's RBI double plated Becker making it a 5-2 game.
The Cards attempted to rally in the bottom of the seventh when sophomore Jordan Vorbrink delivered a two-out single and Goetz reached on an error to bring the tying run to the plate, but a fly out ended the game.
Becker (6-4) took the loss, allowing five unearned runs on six hits and striking out five in seven innings. Hensley led the Cards offensively with a 2-for-3 performance at the plate.
Katie Sutherland-Finch (4-0) got the win, holding the Cards scoreless on one hit and striking out one in two innings. Stephanie Trzcinski did not allow a run and surrendered one hit and one strikeout in 2.2 innings to get the save.
