Cardinals fall in overtime to the Cavaliers
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Louisville women's soccer team fell 1-0 in overtime to No. 13 Virginia on Sunday afternoon. The Cardinals fall to 8-6-0 overall and 2-4-0 in the ACC while Virginia improves to 8-3-3 overall and 3-1-2 in overtime.
The Cardinals best shot of the game came in the 29th minute with a shot from Allison Whitfield. The Cavaliers finished with a 7-3 shot advantage and a 2-0 corner kick advantage in the first half. The Louisville defense was able to hold off the Virginia offense, with Gabby Kouzelos making four saves in the first half.
Virginia kept the majority of possession again in the second half, outshooting the Cardinals 8-2 but the Cardinals limited them to just two shots on goal in the half. Neither team was able to get in a rhythm offensively, forcing the overtime period after a scoreless regulation.
The Cavaliers got the first shot in the overtime period, hitting the post in the first minute of play. Kaela Dickerman had a shot blocked in the 98th minute. One minute later, Virginia's Veronica Latsko took a long ball and found the back of the net for the golden goal.
Virginia finished the match with a 17-6 shot advantage and a 5-1 corner kick advantage. Emina Ekic led the Cardinals with two shots. Kouzelos finished with a season-high six saves. The Cavaliers' Laurel Ivory finished with one save.
The Cardinals return home to the friendly confines of Lynn Stadium on Friday, Oct. 13 as they host Pittsburgh at 5:30 p.m., part of a double header with the Cardinal men.
