Women's Soccer Defeats Clemson 2-1 for an ACC Road Win

CLEMSON, S.C.-- The University of Louisville women's soccer team defeated Clemson 2-1 on Thursday night at Historic Riggs Stadium. With the ACC road win, the Cardinals improve to 8-5-0 on the year and 2-3-0 in the ACC. Clemson falls to 7-4-1 overall and 1-3-1 in the ACC.Â
"I am very pleased with our performance tonight," said head coach Karen Ferguson-Dayes. "I thought we moved the ball well, created numerous scoring chances and were able to score two great goals. I'm very proud of this team's commitment to the process because it paid off."
The Cardinals came out in the first half and took control on the offensive end by keeping possession. The offensive pressure paid off in the 14th minute as Mollie Rouse found Allison Whitfield five yards in front of the box for the goal and a 1-0 lead. Â
The Tigers best shot came in the 27th minute but Gabby Kouzelos made the save. The Cardinal defensive line held Clemson to just three shots in the half, for a 1-0 lead at the break.Â
Louisville finished the first half with a 6-3 shot advantage and a 2-0 corner kick advantage. Kouzelos finished with three saves in the half while Clemson's Sandy MacIver finished with two.
The Cardinals continued to pressure offensively to start the second half but Clemson found the equalizer in the 50th minute with a goal from Mariana Speckmaier.Â
Louisville stayed with the game plan and continued to press. Ten minutes later it paid off for the Cards. Emina Ekic sent a pass to Whitfield who crossed the ball into a streaking Brooklynn Rivers who found the back of the net for a 2-1 Cardinal lead.Â
The Tigers pressed late in the game, looking for the equalizer but the tough Louisville defense held them at bay. The Cardinals earned a 2-1 victory, for their first ACC road win of the season.Â
Clemson finished with a 14-9 shot advantage while the Cardinals held a 3-0 advantage in corner kicks. Kouzelos finished with four saves and MacIver finished with five.Â
Louisville will continue the road stretch at No. 13 Virginia on Sunday for a 2:00 p.m. start. Â
