Louisville women post best ACC finish in school history
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Propelled by sophomore Dorcas Wasike's second-place finish, the University of Louisville women's cross country team placed second at the ACC Cross Country Championships Friday morning at E.P. "Tom" Sawyer State Park. The finish was Louisville's best as a member of the ACC, topping last year's mark of fourth-place.
"When you look at the women's race, obviously, a terrific finish," said Louisville head coach Dale Cowper. "Coming into the weekend, we thought there were probably eight teams coming to campus that thought they could be runner-up. We were able to come out on top."
Wasike was locked in a duel with Syracuse senior Paige Stoner down the home stretch, eventually finishing with a 6K personal-best time of 19:54.1 and earning All-ACC honors. Fellow sophomore Kassidy Manning was also named to the All-ACC team after she placed 15th with a personal-best time of 20:31.2.
Seniors Mia Ross and Bailey Davis just missed out on the honors, finishing 22nd and 23rd respectively. Ross and junior Aurilla Wilson also posted new personal-bests in the race. With five runners in the top 50, the Cards earned 109 points, following behind NC State in first with 43.
"It was a great day," said coach Cowper. "If we drew it up on paper, I don't think we could have written the story better today."
Earlier in the men's 8K championship race, junior Daniel Fleace continued his strong season with a 33rd-place finish, setting a new personal-best time of 24:15.5. Freshman Ben Ewert also set a new personal record with a time of 25:26.6, placing him 91st in the field and second on the team.
In the overall standings, the Cards finished 15th with 384 points, as Syracuse grabbed another conference title with 27 points. Syracuse senior Justyn Knight earned his second-consecutive individual title, posting a time of 23:13.0, finishing just ahead of Virginia junior Brent Demarest.
The Cards will now set their sights on the upcoming NCAA Southeast Regional on Friday, Nov. 10 in Panorama Farms, Va.
