Women's Soccer Battles No. 5 North Carolina to a Scoreless Draw

Cardinals halt UNC's eight game winning streak with the tie
CARY, N.C. – The University of Louisville women's soccer team battled No. 5 North Carolina to a scoreless draw on Sunday morning at WakeMed Soccer Park's Koka Booth Stadium. The tie halted the Tar Heels' eight game win streak who are now 12-2-1 on the season and 8-0-1 in the ACC. The Cardinals are 9-6-2 overall and 3-4-2 in the ACC.
"I continue to be extremely proud of this team's commitment to defend and their belief in our ability to win," said head coach Karen Ferguson-Dayes. "We have grown tremendously as a team and we are playing our best soccer right now."
The Cardinals best chance came in the 23rd minute with a shot from Allison Whitfield the was collected by the UNC keeper. Carolina's best chances in the first half came after Taylor Otto's shot was saved by a Louisville defender at the 31:58 mark. UNC earned two corner kicks over the next minute and both shots in the penalty area were blocked by Cardinal defenders.
Louisville had two great chances in the second half. Mollie Rouse almost scored on a corner kick that curled into the goal in the 63rd minute before it was cleared it off by a North Carolina defender at the goal line. In the 73rd minute, freshman T.J. Anderson was free in the right side of the box but her shot from close range bounded off the left post.
The Tar Heels' best chance in the second half came with 1:48 left to play in regulation as Jessie Scarpa had a one-on-one chance in the box with Cardinal keeper Gabby Kouzelos who made the diving save to keep the clean slate and force the overtime period.
North Carolina held the majority of possession in both overtime periods, but the Cardinals' back line held tight while Kouzelos made two great saves in each perod.
North Carolina finished with a 19-12 edge in shots and an 11-5 edge in corner kicks over the Cardinals. Kouzelos finished with five saves, along with one team save. UNC's Samanth Leshnak finished with one save.
The Cardinals will wrap up the regular season on Thursday, Oct. 26 at NC State.
