This Week: The Louisville men's and women's track and field teams kick off 2017 with a two-day indoor event this weekend in Lexington, Ky. at the UK Invitational. Field events are scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m. Friday with the women's weight throw followed by the men's weight throw at 6:30 p.m. Running events are slated to start at 7:00 p.m. with the women's distance medley relay followed by the men's distance medley relay at 7:15 p.m. in Nutter Field House.

The meet continues on Saturday with field events beginning at 9:00 a.m. with the men's and women's high jump finals. The running events are slated to begin at 12:00 p.m. with the women's 60-meter hurdles semifinals followed by the men's 60-meter hurdles semifinals at 12:20 p.m.

Louisville will be competing against 21 teams, including the men's preseason no. 21 Ohio State and the women's preseason no. 8 Kentucky. The field will also include Akron, Arkansas State, Asbury, Ball State, Bellarmine, Berea, Cincinnati, Cumberland (TN), Dayton, Eastern Kentucky, IUPUI, Indiana Tech, James Madison, Kentucky State, Marshall, Spalding, Tennessee State, Washington and Jefferson, and Xavier.

Last Time Out: Before Christmas break, senior Emmonnie Henderson and redshirt-senior Dolly Nyemah travelled to the Hoosier Open. Henderson took first and set a new school and personal records in the women's shot put with a throw of 17.17m/56'4". She broke Khadija Abdullah's record of 17.06m/55'11.75" set at the 2013 Big East Championship. This was her second win in the event this season, the first coming at the Vanderbilt Indoor Opener. Nyemah placed second in the women's weight throw with a mark of 19.68m/64'7".

Immediate Impact: Freshman Alexis Gibbons began her collegiate career by breaking a seven year old school record in the long jump with a mark of 6.26m/20' 6 ½" on Dec. 3, 2016 at the Vanderbilt Indoor Opener, this was also a facility record. Gibbons broke the previous school record of 6.23m/20'-5 ¼" set by Amaka Omenyinma at the 2009 Big East Indoor Championships.

Newcomer Jerin Allen also made a big impact in his first appearance as a Cardinal. The junior transfer took first in the high jump with a mark of 2.17m/7' 1 ½".

Last Year: The Cardinals also had a strong showing at last year's UK Invitational. Senior Bre'Yana Wash took first in the long jump with a mark of 5.87m/19-0.25, and redshirt-senior Edwin Kibichiy won the mile with a time of 4:09.16. These two will look to defend their titles in these events this weekend. Â
