LOUISVILLE, KY. – The University of Louisville women's soccer team bounced back after their first loss of the season with a 3-1 win over Harvard on Sunday night at Lynn Stadium. Freshman Brooklynn Rivers scored two goals in the win to lead the Cardinals. Louisville improves to 4-1-1 on the year while Harvard falls to 2-2-0.
"Harvard is an excellent team, and the first two goals we scored were completely against the run of play," said head coach Karen Ferguson-Dayes. "They are super athletic and great through the middle of the field. Anybody you play two nights after your big rivalry is a trap game, that's what we call it, so the response we had tonight was awesome. We definitely controlled the tempo of the game, maybe not so much offensively, but I think we controlled the spaces defensively so they couldn't put an attack in, and they have a big time player in Margaret Purse."
The Cardinals saw quickly how talented the Crimson were in the opening kick. Purse kicked the ball from midfield and almost scored but the ball hit the cross bar and bounced out and Louisville keeper Taylor Bucklin collected the ball.
Rivers struck first for the Cardinals in the third minute. Sarah Feola sent a cross inside the box to Rivers who sent the ball past the keeper for a 1-0 lead. Ten minutes later Rivers got free on a breakaway and Jill Vetere sent the ball into the box and Rivers sent the ball into the upper right corner for a 2-0 Louisville lead.
Purce got the Crimson within one, scoring in the 32nd minute on a breakaway. In the 39th minute, Vetere sent a cross into the box to freshman Arianna Ferraro, who sent the ball through the keeper's legs for a 3-1 Cardinal lead just before the half.
Neither team was able to get much offense going in the second half. The Cardinals controlled the tempo and the defense kept the talented Crimson offense at bay.
Louisville finished the match with a 13-8 shot advantage while Harvard held a 4-0 corner kicks. Bucklin finished with one save while Harvard's two keepers finished with four saves.
The Cardinals will be back in action on Friday, Sept. 9 as they host Ball State at 7:30 p.m. in Lynn Stadium.
