
Baseball Notebook: Fall Scrimmages Set for Thursday, Friday

Louisville’s 2016 recruiting class ranked 17th by Collegiate Baseball newspaper; Ege earns first MLB win
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville baseball team will close the fourth week of fall workouts with two open scrimmages this week at Jim Patterson Stadium starting Thursday at 3:30 p.m., ET. The Cardinals are also slated to scrimmage on Friday at 3 p.m., ET, while batting practice will begin approximately 1 hour, 15 minutes prior to first pitch each day.
WEEK THREE SCRIMMAGE HIGHLIGHTS
Louisville reached the midway point of its fall schedule with a trio of scrimmages last weekend at Jim Patterson Stadium. In Thursday's opener, Devin Mann was 3-for-3 with two doubles, a walk and three runs scored, while Colby Fitch added two doubles and one RBI. Brendan McKay finished 2-for-4 with a home run and Austin Clemons added a three-run homer. On the mound, righthander Michael McAvene had one strikeout in two scoreless innings, while lefthander J.D. Mundt worked two innings without allowing an earned run.
On Friday, McKay connected for two more home runs and added two walks, while Ryan Summers was 3-for-4 with a double, two runs scored and an RBI. Colin Lyman had two hits, including a home run, and drove in two runs, Mann had two hits and one RBI and Michael Bollmer was 2-for-4 with one RBI. Righty Hunter Sullivan pitched two innings without allowing a run.
In Saturday's weekend finale, McKay capped his strong week with a 2-for-3 performance. Summers added another big day at the plate with three hits, a double, two stolen bases and one RBI and Mann continued his outstanding work at the plate this fall with a 2-for-4 effort, including a double. The pitching staff was led on Saturday by righty Lincoln Henzman, who had three strikeouts and allowed just one hit in two dominant innings. Righty Riley Thompson made his fall debut with one strikeout in a perfect inning of relief and righty Austin Dickey added two strikeouts in three innings.
LOUISVILLE'S 2016 RECRUITING CLASS RANKED 17TH BY COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER
The Cardinals' 2016 recruiting class, currently enrolled and participating in fall workouts, was ranked 17th nationally by Collegiate Baseball newspaper on Monday afternoon. The 2016 class ranking marked the seventh time in the last nine years Louisville has earned a top 25 national recruiting ranking. The class includes five players in the top 310 spots on the Perfect Game Top Incoming Freshmen list – infielder Tyler Fitzgerald (Rochester, Ill./No. 10 overall), righthanded pitcher Michael McAvene (Camby, Ind./No. 235), infielder Jake Snider (Louisville, Ky./No. 256), righty pitcher Austin Dickey (Jeffersonville, Ind./No. 260) and lefty pitcher Nick Bennett (Cincinnati, Ohio/No. 308).
EGE EARNS FIRST MLB WIN IN RELIEF OUTING FOR THE ANGELS
Lefthanded pitcher Cody Ege became the third different University of Louisville baseball alumnus to earn a Major League Baseball victory this season when the Cherokee, Iowa, native registered worked 0.2 inning of shutout relief in the Los Angeles Angels' road win over the Houston Astros on Sept. 23. Ege joined righthanders Chad Green (New York Yankees) and Matt Koch (Arizona Diamondbacks), who also registered their first MLB wins this season. In 17 relief appearances this season for the Angels and the Miami Marlins, Ege is 1-0 with eight strikeouts in 10.2 innings. KOCH DELIVERS IMPRESSIVE OUTING IN FIRST MLB START
Koch, who made his MLB debut on Sept. 9, continued his strong finish to the 2016 season for the Arizona Diamondbacks with a terrific outing in his first career big league start on Sept. 27. Hailing from Cherokee, Iowa, Koch took a no-hitter into the sixth inning in a road matchup against Max Scherzer and the Washington Nationals. In his longest career outing, Koch finished with a no-decision after being charged with two runs on one hit with three strikeouts in 5.0+ innings. In six appearances for the Diamondbacks, Koch is 1-1 with a 2.25 ERA and seven strikeouts in 12.0 innings.
