Four different players score for the Cardinals on Sunday afternoon
LOUISVILLE, KY. – The Louisville women's soccer team finished with a third consecutive shutout, defeating Toledo 4-0 on Sunday afternoon at Lynn Stadium. The Cardinals improve to 3-0-1 on the season while Toledo falls to 1-2-0.
"In the first half I thought we looked good and then in the second half, I think the weekend caught up to us and the heat for sure caught up to us," said head coach Karen Ferguson-Dayes. "Just like Friday, today we were about to play a lot of players. We are getting some significant minutes from our bench players and we are getting some great chances, I think we scored 22 seconds into the game. Eight goals and two shutouts on the weekend was great."
Louisville got on the board early, scoring 22 seconds into the match. Freshman Brooklynn Rivers sent a cross to a streaking Sarah Feola who fired a bullet from 20 yards out past the keeper for a 1-0 Cardinal lead.
Twenty minutes later, Gabrielle Vincent sent a cross into the box to Alison Price for a one-on-one with the keeper. Price chipped the ball past the keeper for a 2-0 Louisville lead. The Cardinals were not finished in the first half. In the 44th minute, Caroline Kimble gathered a deflection from 40 yards out and blasted it past the keeper for 3-0 Cardinal lead at the half.
Louisville finished the first half with a 5-4 shot advantage while both teams finished with a corner kick. Taylor Bucklin finished with one save while Toledo's Katie Wilson finished with one.
The hot and humid temperatures slowed down the Cardinals' accuracy in the second half. Sophomore Jill Vetere scored her first goal of the season in the 66th minute. She slipped past her defender in the box and sent a shot to the upper left corner for a 4-0 Louisville lead.
The Cardinals finished the match with a 22-7 shot advantage and a 2-1 corner kick advantage. Bucklin finished with two saves while Wilson finished with six.
The Cardinals will be back in action on Friday, Sept. 2 as they host Kentucky at 7:30 p.m. in Lynn Stadium for the Battle of the Bluegrass.
