Softball Upsets No. 5 Florida State in Doubleheader Split

Hensley's two-hit shutout helps Cards upset Seminoles 4-0 in game one, Florida State takes game two 9-0
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The University of Louisville softball team upset No. 5 Florida State 4-0 behind freshman Megan Hensley's two-hit shutout in game one and fell 9-0 in game two of an ACC doubleheader on Saturday at FSU's JoAnne Graf Field. The Cardinals (34-15, 15-7 ACC) and the Seminoles (44-8, 20-2) will play the rubber game Sunday at 12 p.m.

"I thought Megan Hensley pitched well and we got some timely hits in the first game, but we were inconsistent today against a very good Florida State team," said Sandy Pearsall.

Louisville 4 – Florida State 0
Freshman Megan Hensley tossed a two-hit complete game shutout to lead the Cards to a 4-0 win over No. 5/5 Florida State in game one of an ACC series.

After three scoreless innings, Louisville broke through with three runs in the top of the third. Junior Maryssa Becker put the Cards on the scoreboard when she led off the frame with a shot that cleared the fence in left centerfield for her eighth homer of the season. One out later, senior Hailey Smith walked and back-to-back hits by sophomores Nicole Pufahl and Jenna Jordan loaded the bases for senior Brittany Sims whose grounder to third base saw Smith out at the plate, but left the bases loaded for junior Morgan Meyer who connected on a two-run single to make the score 3-0.

Louisville tacked on another run in the seventh when hits by sophomore Sidney Melton and Becker put two runners on with two outs. Melton came around to score on a hit by Hensley to increase Louisville's lead to 4-0.

The Seminoles' best chance to score came in the fourth inning when Jessica Warren ripped a one-out double and took third on a groundout by Alex Powers, but Hensley and the Cardinals' defense went on to retire the 11 batters to finish the game and preserve the shutout.

Hensley (15-4) struck out one and did not issue a walk en route to her third shutout of the season. Becker went 2 for 4 with a home run while Melton finished the game with a hit and two RBIs.

Jessica Burroughs (23-5) took the loss after giving up four earned runs on nine hits and striking out five in seven innings. Jessica Warren and Sydney Broderick each had a hit for the Seminoles.

In game two, the Seminoles jumped to an early lead with a run in the bottom of the first. Ellie Cooper singled and took third on Warren's one-out double to place two runners in scoring position for Powers whose groundout plated Cooper.

The third inning brought three more Florida State runs. Morgan Klaevemann led off the home half of the inning with a bunt single and stole second. Cooper reached safely on a bunt, but a throwing error on the play brought Klaevemann home to make the score 2-0. Warren stepped up to the plate and blasted a two-run shot over the left field fence extend Florida State's lead to 4-0.

The Seminoles used four hits and two errors to put up a five-spot in the fourth. Carsyn Gordon and Victoria East got the offense started with back-to-back hits. Cali Harrod reached on an error to send Gordon home. A wild pitch plated East. Another miscue on Klaevemann's bunt added another run. Cooper delivered an RBI triple and a groundout by Warren made the score 9-0.

Becker (19-9) took the loss after giving up nine runs, eight earned, on nine hits in four innings. McNary, Becker and Meyer each registered a hit for the Cards.

Meghan King (20-3) got the complete game shutout with four strikeouts in five innings. Cooper was 3 for 3 with three runs while Warren went 2 for 3 with three RBIs to pace the Seminoles offensively.
