Grand slams by Goetz and Hensley help Cards push win streak to 11 games
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The No. 25 University of Louisville softball team used grand slams by freshmen Lillie Goetz and Megan Hensley to help spark a 12-0 win over host Western Kentucky on Wednesday evening. The Cardinals (23-6) extended their season-high win streak to 11 games while junior Maryssa Becker (12-4) picked up her eighth straight win. The Lady Toppers fall to 11-16 on the season.
Â
The Cards used two walks and four hits - including Goetz's second grand slam in as many games – to put up a seven spot in the top of the second. Sophomore Nicole Pufahl got the offense started with a walk. Back-to-back hits by senior Brittany Sims and junior Morgan Meyer loaded the bases for sophomore Sidney Melton who earned a walk to put Louisville on the scoreboard. Becker followed with a two-run single and Hensley was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Goetz who crushed a shot over the right field fence to bring the score to 7-0.
Â
UofL used five hits and another grand slam – this time by Hensley - to score five more runs in the third. Pufahl got the inning started with a double. After taking third on a groundout by Meyer, she came home when junior Jordan McNary beat the throw on a two-out infield hit. Melton singled and Becker walked to load the bases for Hensley who connected on her team-best eighth homer of the season, and first career grand slam, to increase the lead to 12-0.
Â
WKU threatened to score in the bottom of the fifth when Lexie Norfleet singled and took second on the throw to put a runner in scoring position for the first time in the game. A groundout by Kathryn Downing sent her to third and a walk to Taylor Proctor placed two runners on with two outs, but Becker got Brooke Holloway to ground out to preserve the shutout.
Â
Becker (12-4) scattered four hits and struck out five en route to her third shutout of the season. She also went 1 for 2 with two RBIs and two runs at the plate to help lead the Cards who had 11 hits in the game with every player in the starting lineup recording at least one hit. Melton went 2 for 3 with two runs and an RBI while McNary also went 2 for 3 with a run and an RIB. Hensley and Goetz each had a hit and four RBIs in the game.
Hannah Parker (6-10) took the loss after giving up seven earned runs on four hits and striking out on in 1.2 innings of work. Parker, Holloway, Jordan Mauch and Norfleet each had a hit for the Lady Toppers.Â
The Cardinals (23-6, 8-1 ACC) will return to conference play when they travel to Chapel Hill, N.C., for a three-game series at North Carolina this weekend.
