Cards sweep singles and doubles
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville men's tennis team defeated Northern Kentucky 7-0 in the second match of a doubleheader Sunday evening at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
"I think it's more challenging mentally to play a solid team like Northern Kentucky right after a heartbreaking Clemson loss, knowing that we were two points away from winning, so my challenge was that we've got to look forward to the next opportunity, not look back at what just happened. I think those guys did that."
The Cardinals gained an early edge when the freshman duo of Christopher Morin-Kougoucheff and George Hedley teamed to beat Nick Lang and Jody Maginley 7-5 at No. 2. Junior Sean Donohue and sophomore Courtney Lock outlasted NKU's Adrian Isache and Court Clark 7-6 at the three-spot to clinch the first point of the match. Seniors Alex Gornet and Jeffrey Brown were leading Mate VIrag and Lukas Clemens 6-5 when their match was abandoned.
In singles action, Donohue gave Louisville a 2-0 lead with his 6-2, 6-1 win over Blaine Carr at No. 6. Brown defeated Clark 6-1, 6-4 at the four-spot to make the score 3-0. Hedley clinched the win with a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Clemens at No. 3. Gornet's 6-0, 6-2 decision over Virag at the No. 1 spot made the score 5-0. Freshman Brandon Lancaster bested Isache 6-2, 7-5 at the five position and Morin-Kougoucheff wrapped up the match with a 4-6, 6-0, 10-6 win over Maginley on court two.
"I think we were a little slow coming out of the gate, but Northern Kentucky played a really good doubles point," said Ecarma. "Once they got we teeth sunk into the match, we started playing really well. I really appreciate the effort, playing with a lot of heart. The teammates that weren't playing were really out there loud and proud. It was a really good way to end the weekend."
Louisville (9-9) will hit the road for a pair of ACC matches next weekend. The Cards will travel to Chapel Hill, N.C., to take on No. 1 North Carolina before heading to Blacksburg, Va., to face No. 39 Virginia Tech.
