Cardinals drop the first game of the season at Duke
DURHAM, N.C. -- The No. 5 Louisville lacrosse team dropped its first game of the season, falling 16-5 at No. 15 Duke on Saturday afternoon. The Cardinals fall to 7-1 on the year and 2-1 in ACC play. Kelli Gerding led the Cardinals with two goals.
"I am incredibly disappointed in our team's performance today," said head coach Kellie Young. "We forgot that hard work, execution, and teamwork have been the keys to our success. It is time to get back to work at the level that will grow our game."
Duke got out to a quick start behind a pair of unassisted goals. Sophomore Julia Wood responded with a free position goal to cut the lead to one. Duke responded with a 7-0 run through the end of the period. The Blue Devils finished the half with an 8-1 lead.
Duke finished the half with a 17-9 shot advantage and finished with an 11-6 advantage in ground balls. Louisville held a 7-3 advantage in draw controls but turned the ball over six times compared to Duke's three turnovers.
Duke continued the momentum into the second half, scoring the first two goals. Louisville broke through for the first time since the 20:50 mark in the first when Kelli Gerding snapped the 27-minute scoreless streak with a pair of goals. It looked like Louisville was set to make a comeback but Duke took advantage of some Louisville penalties and scored two straight goals.
Senior Cortnee Daley scored her first goal of the game at the 13:30 mark on a free position goal to cut the lead to 13-4. Duke responded with two more goals and the Cardinals could never close the gap. Jillian Balog scored in the fourth minute on a free position shot but Duke scored in the final minute to secure the decisive 16-5 win. The Blue Devils limited the Cardinals to their lowest scoring output of the season.
The Blue Devils held a 24-20 advantage in shots and finished with a 17-11 advantage in ground balls. Louisville finished with a 15-7 advantage in draw controls but were unable to convert that advantage into goals scored. The Cardinals did cut down the turnovers, finishing with just one in the second half.
Brittany Read notched five saves in the net for the Cardinals. Senior Kaylin Morissette led the Cards with 12 draw controls and three ground balls.
Louisville will be back in action on March 16 as they travel to Canisius.
