Junior defender ranks fifth nationally with 11 assists and has three goals while starting all 21 matches for No. 4 Louisville
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - University of Louisville junior defender Tim Kubel was named Tuesday among 15 semifinalists for the prestigious MAC Hermann Trophy, the most coveted individual honor in NCAA Division I soccer. The announcement was made by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America with the semifinalists chosen based on voting by NCAA Division I soccer coaches.
The MAC Hermann Trophy has been presented annually by the Missouri Athletic Club since 1967. Three men's finalists and three women's finalists will be named on December 14 at the conclusion of voting by NCAA Division I soccer coaches. The 2016 MAC Hermann Trophy banquet will be held at the Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis on January 6, 2017 to formally announce this year's winners.
The 2016 recognition for Kubel marks the fourth time a Louisville player has been named as a semifinalist for the MAC Hermann Trophy and the first since Andrew Farrell in 2012. Colin Rolfe was the first Cardinal to be selected as a semifinalist receiving the recognition on two occasions in 2009 and 2010. Kubel enters this weekend's NCAA Championship quarterfinal matches ranked fifth nationally with 11 assists this season to go along with three goals while starting all 21 matches at right back for the No. 4 Cardinals. A three-time All-ACC selection, including a First Team honoree in each of the last two seasons, Kubel was named to the ACC Championship All-Tournament team after scoring a pair of goals in Louisville's two tournament matches. Kubel, who set a school record for assists in a single match with four against Virginia earlier this season, has 15 career collegiate goals and 19 total assists while starting all 62 matches during this three years at UofL. A team captain, this former ACC Freshman of the Year honoree is also a two-time All-ACC Academic Team selection.
The No. 4 Louisville men's soccer team returns to action on Saturday at 7 p.m., ET at Dr. Mark and Cindy Lynn Stadium in an NCAA Championship quarterfinal match against No. 5 Stanford. Tickets are available through the Louisville Cardinals Ticket Office at 502-GO-CARDS or online here.
