Cards win three races in first day of competition.
The University of Louisville women's swimming and diving team won three races in the first day of competition at the SMU Classic Friday night at the Westside Aquatic Center in Lewisville, Texas.
Â
After day 1, Michigan leads the field with 157 points, the Wolverines are followed by USC (156), Louisville (155), UCLA (137), SMU (117) and Miami (82).
"It was a great night for our program," said UofL head coach Arthur Albiero. "Our ladies were battling for every point and we will have a fighting chance going into tomorrow. This group is very balanced with three seniors and three freshmen learning quickly on the go."Â
Â
The Cards started the meet with a win in the 400 medley relay. Alina Kendzior (53.16), Andrea Cottrell (59.37), Grace Oglesby (53.44), and Mallory Comerford (47.47) combined for a time of 3:33.44 and the win.
Â
UCLA's Emma Schanz won the 400-IM in 4:09.52. UofL's Sofie Underdahl went 4:21.79 for fifth in the 400-IM and teammate Marah Pugh was 7th in 4:15.02. Â
Â
In the 200-free, Mallory Comerford was second in 1:43.13 and Abigail Houck was 8th in 1:45.98. The race was won by USC's Louise Hansson. The top two finishers broke the SMU Classic record of 1:45.14 set by Jasmine Tosky of USC in 2012.
Â
Casey Fanz touched the wall first in the 50-free with a time of 22.64 for the Cards. Fellow freshman Grace Oglesby was 11th in 23.64.
Â
Andrea Acquista scored a 250.20 for sixth in the 1-meter diving.
Â
Cardinal Grace Oglesby touched third in the 100-fly, posting a time of 53.64. Abigail Houck was seventh, boarding a 53.48. The meet record is held by Kelsi Worrell, who went 51.51 last year.
Â
Alina Kendzior touched third in the 100-back in 53.13 for the Cards. Teammate Sofie Underdahl was 10th in 55.95. The winner was SMU's Matea Samardzic, who set a new meet record with a 52.92.
Â
UofL's Andrea Cottrell took top honors in the 100-breast with a time of 59.58, as the only swimmer under a minute. Teammate Alina Kendzior 12th in 1:07.57.
Â
UofL was second in the 800-Free Relay with a 7:07.04. Comerford (1:44.15), Abbie Houck (1:45.73), Marah Pugh (1:48.37), Casey Fanz 1:48.79. The Wolverines of Michigan posted an NCAA 'A' time of 7:03.07 for the win.
Â
An unusual format, the SMU Classic features eight swimmers and a diver from each competing school. Swimmers may swim 3 events per day, one of which must be a relay. Each team will enter one swimmer per heat (Consolation and Championship), while relays will only have a Championship heat. Diving events will consist of 6 optional dives on 1m and 3m boards.
