Cleveland named as co-defensive player, Thiaw honored as co-offensive player
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - University of Louisville graduate goalkeeper Stefan Cleveland was named Tuesday as the ACC Men's Soccer Co-Defensive Player of the Week, while junior forward Mohamed Thiaw was chosen as the Co-Offensive Player of the Week. It is the second ACC weekly honor of the season for both Cleveland and Thiaw.
Cleveland, who shared this week's honor with Virginia's Jeff Caldwell, posted a pair of shutouts last week, highlighted by his performance in Friday's 1-0 victory over No. 3 Syracuse. A native of Dayton, Ohio, Cleveland finished with a season-high six saves, including five in the second half as the Cardinals extended their unbeaten streak to eight games and remained atop the ACC Atlantic Division in the win over the Orange. Cleveland, who needed just one save in Louisville's 6-0 win over Belmont, has eight shutouts this season and while allowing only four goals in 12 matches for a 0.32 goals against average.
Thiaw, who was joined by Virginia Tech's Marcelo Acuna as the top offensive players, scored a pair of goals last week for Louisville, including the game-winner in Friday night's home triumph over Syracuse. Hailing from Lexington, Kentucky, Thiaw opened the week by connecting for the first goal of the match in last Tuesday's 6-0 home win against Belmont before delivering his team-leading ninth goal of the season in the victory over the Orange. Thiaw leads the nation with six game-winning goals for the Cardinals, who moved up to No. 4 in this week's NSCAA Top 25.
The No. 4 Louisville men's soccer team hosts No. 9 Indiana tonight at 7 ET at Dr. Mark and Cindy Lynn Stadium. It is the second of three straight matches against top 10 foes for the Cardinals, who also visit No. 7 Wake Forest on Saturday night.
