Volleyball to Host Active Ankle Challenge with Ohio, Utah, Seton Hall

Three NCAA Tournament teams from 2014 visit Cardinal Arena
    The University of Louisville volleyball team continues their homestand this weekend with the Active Ankle Challenge at Cardinal Arena. The Cardinals will face Utah on Friday night at 7:30 p.m. before concluding the tournament on Saturday with matches against Seton Hall at 10:00 a.m. and Ohio at 7:30 p.m.

   Louisville enters the tournament with a 2-3 overall record after recording two losses to Minnesota and then-No. 13 Wisconsin last weekend as part of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. Senior outside hitter Erin Fairs leads the team with 84 kills and averages 4.00 kills per set. Junior outside hitter Janelle Jenkins adds 68 kills and boasts a .301 attack percentage while averaging 3.24 kills per set. Sophomore middle blockers Maggie DeJong and Tess Clark have knocked down 35 and 32 kills, respectively, while adding 39 blocks between the two of them. Senior setter Katie George has 234 assists and leads the ACC with an average of 11.14 assists per set.
   First up for the Cardinals is Utah, who enters the weekend with a 5-2 record after picking up two wins at the Gonzaga Invitational last weekend. The Utes, who hit .259 as a team and has amassed 387 kills on the season, are led by sophomore outside hitter Adora Anae, who has a team-high 120 kills and averages 4.29 kills per set. Sophomore outside hitter Eliza Katoa adds 87 kills and averages 3.22 kills per set. Pac-12 Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week selection Brenna DeYoung leads the Utes defensively with 41 total blocks, averaging 1.64 blocks per set. Senior setter Kendall Cygan and freshman setter Jessie Jorgenson split time setting up the offense with 182 and 144 assists, respectively. The Cards and Utes meet for the first time since 2001 when the Cards took home a 3-0 victory.
   On Saturday morning, the Cards face Seton Hall, who the Cardinals played when they were both members of the BIG EAST Conference. The Pirates enter the match on a three-game winning streak and boasts a 4-2 overall record after winning the Seton Hall Classic last weekend. Freshman outside hitter Cherise Hennigan leads the Pirates with 66 kills and a team-high 3.00 kills per set. Junior outside hitter Danielle Schroeder adds 59 kills while senior middle blocker Amanda Hansen contributes 44 kills. Freshman setter Sophia Coffey leads the offense with 217 assists, averaging 9.86 assists per set. The Cards lead the series 9-1 over the Pirates, with a 3-0 victory in their last meeting in 2012.
   Ohio is the final opponent for the Cardinals at the Active Ankle Challenge. The Bobcats boast a 5-2 overall record including a 3-1 win over then-No. 10 Kentucky earlier in the season. After a 2-1 performance at the Bobcat Invitational last weekend, the Bobcats are receiving votes in the AVCA poll. Sophomore outside hitter Jaime Kosiorek leads the Bobcats' offense with 91 kills and averages 3.50 kills per set. Senior middle blocker Shelby Walker adds 64 kills. Middle blockers Karin Bull and Katie Nelson contribute 43 and 40 kills, respectively. The two also combine for 51 total blocks. Senior setter Abby Gilleland sets up the offense with a team best 264 assists and has also served ten aces. Senior libero and Louisville native, Meredith Ashy, leads the team with 145 digs (5.58 digs per set) and picked up Mid-American Conference East Defensive Player of the Week honors after recording 108 digs last week. The Cardinals lead the series 8-1 and won the last meeting between the two teams with a 3-1 victory in 2011.
   Following the Active Ankle Challenge, the Cardinals have road matches against Cincinnati and Kentucky next week before beginning conference play against Notre Dame.Â
