Cardinals fall on the road to the Wildcats
LEXINGTON, KY. - The University of Louisville women's soccer team fell 1-0 to Kentucky on Friday night at the Bell Soccer Complex in front of a record crowd of 3,371. The Cardinals fall to 1-2-1 on the year while Kentucky improves to 4-1-0.
After more than an hour delay due to lightning, the match kicked off at 8:51 p.m. Kentucky started the game gaining possession, playing to the crowd. Louisville settled down and began to gain possession as well. But the first half saw swings of momentum from each team.Â
Kentucky had two shots on goal but Cardinal keeper Paige Brown was there to collect the ball each time. Shelby Cohen had the best shot of the half in the final minute but it sailed just over the cross bar. Aubrey Baker and Kaela Dickerman also had shots for the Cardinals in the first half that went wide and high.
Kentucky held a 5-3 shot advantage in the first half and a 3-2 corner kick advantage. Brown finished with two saves while UK keeper Katelyn Jensen was not tested.
Senior Casey Whitfield started in the second half and got the Cardinal offense started early. She had a shot in the 53rd minute that went just over the cross bar. But Kentucky then gained possession and took advantage in the 58th minute with a goal from Katy Keen.Â
The Louisville offense responded when Baker took a shot in front of the goal mouth but the keeper punched it out in the 63rd minute. Whitfield then took the deflection but was unable to connect.Â
In the 79th minute, Hannah Konermann had a shot on goal but the keeper made the save. The Cardinals continued to keep pressing offensively but was unable to connect for the equalizer.Â
 Â
Louisville finished the game with a 10-9 shot advantage, including a 7-4 advantage in the second half. Louisville also had a 6-3 corner kick advantage. Brown finished with two saves while Kentucky finished with three saves, all in the second half. Â
