The University of Louisville's Sebastian Stiefelmeyer will face California's Andre Goransson in the first round of the 2015 NCAA Singles Championship Wednesday, May 20 at 12 p.m. (ET) at Baylor's Hurd Tennis Center in Waco, Texas.
Stiefelmeyer, a senior from Vienna, Austria, is the tournament's fifth-seeded player after posting a 40-6 overall singles mark and going 22-3 in dual matches as Louisville's No. 1 player. The 2015 first team all-ACC selection won the prestigious ITA All-American Championship in September 2014, becoming the first player in program history to win the title. He was recently named the Ohio Valley Region's Most Improved (Senior) Player and the Arthur Ashe Sportsmanship and Leadership Award winner.
"I could not be more excited to finish my college career with my first NCAA individual's appearance," said Stiefelmeyer. "I feel ready and confident to finish this year strong. The tremendous support of my team here will further motivate me to do well."
In the first round of the 64-player draw, Stiefelmeyer will take on Goransson who stands at No. 29 in the ITA singles rankings and recently earned the ITA's Northwest Regional Player to Watch after posting a 26-10 overall record and going 14-5 at No. 1 for the Bears.
The winner of the first round matchup will advance to Thursday's round of 32 to face the winner of South Florida's No. 21 Roberto Cid and Georgia's No. 30 Austin Smith.
"This is an exciting moment for Sebastian's career," said UofL head coach Rex Ecarma. "The NCAA Championships is such a big event and gives the winner a wildcard to the U.S. Open. This first step is the first round in which he plays one of the Pac-12 Conference's top players. He has been training with great focus and now it is time to have fun and go for it."
NOTES: Stiefelmeyer is the fourth player in program history to earn a bid to the NCAA Singles Championship and the first since 2011 when Austen Childs earned All-America status by reaching the Round of 16.
• On Jan. 3, he became the first Louisville player to earn the nation's top ranking in singles and reached No. 1 again on March 10. He remained in the top eight throughout the 2015 season.
