LOUISVILLE, Ky. - University of Louisville men's tennis coach Rex Ecarma has announced that Sean Donohue will join the Cardinals in the fall of 2015.
Donohue, a Louisville native and graduate St. Xavier High School, will begin his junior year at Louisville after transferring from the University of Alabama where he played the last two seasons.
"Sean Donohue is a perfect addition to our freshman-dominated team next season," said Ecarma. "He will provide some leadership help for seniors Alex Gornet and Jeff Brown. Our team will be very young with six freshmen and three sophomores. He will be our lone player in the junior class. He comes in with SEC experience especially in doubles which usually decide which team wins the close matches."
While at Alabama, Donohue posted 19 singles wins and 29 doubles victories. He earned ITA Scholar Athlete honors and was a member of the SEC first year honor roll.
Before his time at Alabama, the National High School Tennis Foundation All-American helped win four state high school titles while playing for Louisville's St. Xavier. He won the 2012 Kentucky High School Athletic Association singles title and was a 2013 semifinalist. Donohue capture the 2011 state doubles championship. As a five-star recruit, he was ranked as high as No. 61 nationally and No. 10 in the USTA Southern Region. He won the Baton Rouge Southern Level 2 singles championship, reached the consolation finals of the Fall Southern Level 1A Championships and posted a third place finish in the Ridgeland Southern Level 2 Championships.
"Sean also knows a lot about our program since he had been to many UofL matches and knows a lot of our former players," said Ecarma. "He was a high school teammate of Alex Gornet as well as incoming freshman, Brandon Lancaster. All three local player are former Kentucky State singles or doubles champions and nationally ranked in the top 60. The Donohue family are long-time Cardinal fans that I know will passionately support Sean and the team. He is a perfect fit for this time in our program."
