Stiefelmeyer Earns No. 5 Seed at NCAA Singles Championship
April 29, 2015 | Men's Tennis
The University of Louisville men's tennis player Sebastian Stiefelmeyer has been selected as the overall No. 5 seed in the 2015 NCAA Singles Championship. He becomes the fourth player in program history to earn a bid to the NCAA Singles Championship and the first since 2011 when Austen Childs earned All-America status by reaching the Round of 16.
The singles and doubles competition will be held May 20-25 at Baylor's Hurd Tennis Center in Waco, Texas following the conclusion of the team championship which takes place May 14-19.
"I am so proud of Sebastian Stiefelmeyer again," said UofL head coach Rex Ecarma. "He is only the second UofL player ever seeded and is the highest-ever seeded player. Being the fifth seed and the highest seeded ACC player at the NCAAs, it showed just what a great season he has had. Being ranked No. 1 twice shows that he is a dominating player nationally, and the NCAA committee acknowledged he is the best player in our conference. He has performed at an elite level both semesters and the seeding committee rewarded him for it."
Sixth-ranked Stiefelmeyer (Vienna, Austria) leads the Cardinals with a 40-5 overall record in singles and a 22-2 mark in dual matches as team's No. 1 player. He owns the school record for wins in a season and stands third on Louisville's list for career victories.
On Jan. 3, he became the first player in program history to earn the nation's top ranking in singles and reached No. 1 again on March 10. He has remained in the top eight throughout the 2015 season. In September, 2014, he captured the outdoor Intercollegiate Tennis Association All-American Championship, winning nine-consecutive matches for the title, including six upset victories.
Louisville (23-8) earned an at-large bid to the NCAA team championship and will face Drake in its first round match on May 8 at the University of Illinois.
