
Softball Falls to Ole Miss 5-2

OXFORD, Miss. - The University of Louisville softball team fell to host Ole Miss 5-2 in a non-conference game Saturday afternoon at the Ole Miss Softball Complex. The teams will conclude the series Sunday at 2 p.m. (ET).
The Rebels (26-19) scored two runs each in the first and second innings and added another run in the third to build a 5-0 lead that the Cardinals could not overcome. Ole Miss struck early with two runs in the bottom of the first. Elantra Cox led with a walk, stole second and came around to score on Miranda Strother's RBI double. Alex Schneider followed with an infield single to place two on for Allison Brown's RBI hit.
Ole Miss plated two more in the second. Courtney Syrett registered a leadoff triple and came home on an illegal pitch to make the score 3-0. Cox beat the throw on an infield hit, stole second, took third on a groundout and scored on a wild pitch to make it a 4-0 game.
Brown led off the bottom of the third with a home run to stretch the Rebels' lead to 5-0.
The Cardinals (24-14) got on the scoreboard in the fifth when Brittany Sims connected on a leadoff single and Kayla Soles lined a shot over the centerfield fence. Her third home run of the season made the score 5-2. Arion doubled, took third on Kristina Dillard's sacrifice bunt, but a strikeout and a ground out prevented a third run from crossing the plate.
Louisville threatened in the seventh when Whitney Arion reached on a fielder's choice Brittany Duncan was hit by a pitch to bring the tying run to the plate, but another fielder's choice ended the game.
Maryssa Becker (10-5) took the loss, allowing two earned runs on three hits and striking out one in 1.0 innings. Shelby McCombs entered in relief and surrendered three earned runs on five hits while striking out three in 5.0 innings.
Madi Osias (10-11) got the win, giving up two earned runs on four hits and striking out one in 5.0 innings. Kayla Landwehrmier picked up the save holding the Cards scoring in 2.0 innings. Brown was 2 for 3 with two RBIs to lead the Rebels at the plate.
