No. 10 Lacrosse Defeats American 20-6 on Tuesday Afternoon

The No. 10 Louisville lacrosse team scored a season-high 20 goals to defeat American University 20-6 on Tuesday afternoon at Jacobs Field. The Cardinals improve to 9-3 on the year while American falls to 3-9 on the year. Cortnee Daley led the Cardinals with a season-high six goals.
"I am so proud of each and every one of our players," said head coach Kellie Young. "We got back on track today and executed the plan throughout the game. Every single player contributed to this win, with the highlight being two late goals by first year Jillian Balog."
Louisville jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first six minutes of play. Daley found Faye Brust just 30 seconds into the game to start the Louisville scoring run. Hannah Koloski scored less than a minute later to put the Cards up 2-0.
Daley then scored two straight goals, the first was unassisted and the second was on a free position shot. Koloski then found Carissa Corbett to put the Cards up 5-0. Brust then scored on a free position shot 20 seconds later and then Daley added another goal to cap the 7-0 scoring run.
American's Olivia Mangan stopped the scoring run, scoring two straight goals to cut Louisville's lead to 7-2 with over 17 minutes left to play in the half. Five minutes later, Koloski scored her third goal of the game to push the lead back to 8-2. The Cardinals then took advantage of having a man up as Koloski found Anna Kopecka to put the Cards up 9-2.
A minute later, American scored to cut the lead to 9-3 but the Cardinals would answer with another scoring run. This time it was a 6-0 run started by the dangerous combo of Kaylin Morissette and Burst. Then Brust found Daley for the next goal less than a minute later. Then Kopecka notched two assists finding Koloski and then Daley for a 13-3 lead with 47 seconds remaining in the half. Then 30 seconds later, Koloski scored again for a 14-3 lead at the break.
Louisville finished the first half with a 17-7 shot advantage and a 10-6 ground ball advantage. The Cardinals were able to control possession with a 12-6 draw advantage in the second half.
The Cardinals came out strong against to start the second half, scoring two straight goals. Daley scored her sixth and final goal of the game to begin the scoring run, 10 seconds into the half. Koloski then scored her fifth goal of the game 10 seconds later for a 16-3 lead.
American then scored two straight goals on free position shots to cut the lead to 16-5. Burst answered by scoring two straight goals to put the Cards up 18-5 with 11 minutes left to play. American then scored to cut the lead to 18-6.
With a minute and a half left to play, freshman Jillian Balog scored on a free position shot. She scored again with 16 seconds left for a 20-6 win.
Louisville finished the game with a 30-15 shot advantage and a 19-9 draw controls advantage. Morissette finished with 13 draw controls to lead the Cardinals. Koloski and Brust finished with five goals apiece while Balog finished with two. Kopecka led the Cardinals with three assists while Koloski had two.
The Cards return to action on Saturday, April 4 when they host No. 2 North Carolina at 1:00 p.m. at the UofL Lacrosse Stadium.
