
Softball Completes Series Sweep with 13-7 Win over Syracuse

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Sophomore Tiarra Sanabria went 2 for 2 with two home runs, Jordan McNary added an inside the park home run and Kelsi Jones went 4 for 4 to help lead the University of Louisville softball team to a 13-7 win over Syracuse and complete an ACC series sweep Sunday afternoon at Ulmer Stadium. Louisville (22-8) improves to 11-1 in ACC play to remain tied for first with Florida State in league standings.
The Cards took a 3-0 lead in the second when Tiarra Sanabria sent a two-out shot off of the scoreboard in left centerfield for her first career home run. Alison Szydlowski followed with a single and Jordan McNary sent a shot to the fence in left centerfield and sprinted around the bases for an inside the park home run - the first of her career.
Sanabria led off the second with another shot over the left field fence to make the score 4-0.
Syracuse (12-17, 0-6 ACC) capitalized on three hits, two walks and three errors to score seven runs in the fourth. Julie Wambold led off the inning with a walk and was safe at second base when Danielle Chitkowski reached on a fielder's choice. Sydney O'Hara's RBI hit brought Wambold home. Jocelyn Cater reached on another fielder's choice and an error sent O'Hara home to make the score 4-2. Rachel Burkhardt followed with a home run to give the Orange a 5-4 lead. The third Louisville miscue of the inning sent two more Syracuse runs home to extend the lead to 7-4.
The Cardinals began to chip away at the lead in the sixth when McNary delivered a leadoff single and Jones followed with a hit. An error on the play sent the runners to second and third for Whitney Arion's two-run single which cut the lead to one run.
Louisville used seven hits and an error to put up a seven-spot of its own in the seventh inning. McNary registered her third hit of the game and came around to score on a triple by Jones to tie the game. Arion singled to bring Jones home and scored on Becker's double. After a hit by Smith, Kayla Soles connected on a two-run double. Sanabria's sacrifice fly brought Soles home and Benz, who had singled, eventually came around to score on a wild pitch for the 13-7 final.
Shelby McCombs (8-2) got the win, allowing one unearned run and striking out a career-high seven batters in 3.1 innings of work. Jones was 4 for 4 with two runs, McNary was 3 for 4 with three runs and two RBIs and Arion was 2 for 3 with three RBIs and a run to help pace the Cardinals who pounded out a season-high 20 hits in the game.
Cater (8-12) took the loss, allowing 13 runs, 10 earned, on 19 hits and striking out four in 6.2 innings. Burkhardt finished the game 1 for 3 with three RBIs to lead the Orange at the plate.
