Men's Tennis Defeats Clemson 5-2
March 29, 2015 | Men's Tennis
CLEMSON, S.C.- The No. 23-ranked University of Louisville men's tennis team defeated Clemson 5-2 to move to 5-2 in the ACC Sunday afternoon at Hoke Sloan Tennis Center.
"Winning on the road against a great ACC program is an accomplishment," said UofL head coach Rex Ecarma. "We were up 3-1 for quite a long time until Chris took the match over and won in three sets. Van's win was icing on the cake as he also came back from behind to win. To say these guys were gutsy this weekend against a tough crowd and a very good team is an understatement. I'm so proud of all of them."
The Cards got on the scoreboard early with doubles wins at Nos. 2 and 3 to take the first point of the match. Van Damrongsri and Luis Elizondo teamed to beat Hampton Drake and Christian Harris 8-6 at No. 3 while Sebastian Stiefelmeyer and Albert Wagner clinched the doubles point with an 8-5 decision over Robert Dudley and Luke Johnson on court two.
In singles action, the Tigers evened the score at the four-spot where Luke Johnson defeated Michael Lippens 6-1, 6-1. The Cardinals answered on court three where Wagner, No. 94 in the ITA singles rankings, beat Austin Ansari 6-4, 6-1. At the top spot, Louisville's fifth-ranked Sebastian registered a 6-4, 6-3 win over Alejandro Augusto to put the Cards back on top 3-1. On court five, Chris Simich lost his first set against Daffra Sanon 6-3, but came back to win the next two sets 6-2, 6-4 to clinch the victory for the Cards. At No. 6 , Van Damrongsri also used three sets to beat Hampton Drake 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 to make the score 5-1. The match ended on court two where No. 123 Alex Gornet and Hunter Harrington were battling before Harrington prevailed 6-7(3-7), 7-6 (8-6), 1-0 (10-6).
The Cardinals (19-4, 5-2) will continue ACC action when they play host to Virginia Tech Friday at 2:30 p.m.
