LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Maryssa Becker's two-run single in the bottom of the sixth broke a 5-5 tie and lifted the University of Louisville softball team to a 7-5 win over Virginia to complete an ACC series sweep Sunday afternoon at Ulmer Stadium. The Cardinals improve to 13-7 on the season and move their conference record to 6-0.
Virginia (5-21, 1-8) jumped to a 1-0 lead with an unearned run in the first inning. Aimee Chapdelaine delivered a single, moved around to third on an error and a passed ball, and came home on a sacrifice fly by Katie Park.
The Cards responded in the home half of the first when Kelsi Jones led off with a double, took third on Jordan McNary's sacrifice bunt and crossed the plate on a wild pitch to even the score at 1-1.
The Cavaliers regained the lead with two more unearned runs in the second inning. Megan Harris got the offense started with a single. Allison Davis followed with a hit and an error on the play placed runners at second and third for Aimee Chapdelaine's two-out, two-run single which put Virginia back on top 3-1.
Louisville got a run back in bottom of the second when Kayla Soles sent a two-out solo shot over the left field fence for her second homer of the season which pulled the Cards within a run.
The Cardinals added another run in the fourth. Soles registered a one-out single, Tiarra Sanabria reached on a fielder's choice and Jones walked to load the bases for McNary's RBI hit which tied the game at 3-3.
The offense continued for Louisville with a pair of runs in the fifth. Brittany Sims connected on a two-out double to set up Whitney Arion's fourth home run of the season which pulled the Cardinals ahead 5-3.
Louisville's lead was short-lived when Virginia came back with two runs in the sixth. Madison Labshere drew a one-out walk to set up Megan Harris' game-tying home run to make the score 5-5.
In the home half of the sixth, the Cards loaded the bases with three straight singles by Soles, Sanabria and Jones. McNary hit into a fielder's choice which saw Soles out at the plate, but kept the bases full for Becker who delivered a two-run single to give Louisville a 7-5 lead.
Becker, who had started the game in the circle and surrendered three unearned runs before being lifted for Madi Norman in the fourth, re-entered to pitch in the top of the seventh. The sophomore retired all three batters she faced to earn her second save of the season. Norman (5-4) got the win after giving up two earned runs on three hits in 4.0 innings of relief. Soles was 3 for 3 with a home run and two runs scored while Jones added a 3 for 3 performance with a double and two runs.
Andie Formby (4-11) took the loss after giving up five earned runs on 10 hits and struck out one in 4.0 innings of relief. Harris paced the Cavaliers offensively with a 2 for 3, two run, two RBI performance at the plate.
Louisville will return to action Wednesday when the Cards travel to Ohio State for a doubleheader and will make up a previously postponed game at Miami (Ohio) Thursday.
