Ben Williams Earns All-America Honors with a Third Place Finish at the NCAA Indoor Championships
March 14, 2015 | Track & Field
University of Louisville track and field's Ben Williams earned indoor All-American honors for the second consecutive season in the triple jump. Williams finished third in the event at the NCAA Indoor Championships late Saturday night in Fayetteville, Ark. With the third place finish by Williams, Louisville finished tied for 31st in the men's team standings with six points.
"Ben was outstanding tonight," said head coach Dale Cowper. "He was able to catch a couple of big jumps in round one and two, then fought through some calf cramping the rest of the night to finish third overall."
Williams finished with a jump of 16.53m (54-2.75) to finish third, earning USTFCCCA first team All-America honors. It is his second first team All-America honor after finishing fifth in the event last year. He is the second Cardinal to earn All-America honors in the event, behind 2007 national champion Andre Black.
"Coach Walker and Ben have done a great job working through the indoor season," said Cowper. "He has earned a break before we head into the outdoor season."
The United Kingdom native was seeded fifth heading into the NCAA Championship after a personal best jump of 16.55m/54-3.75. The mark, which earned Williams medalist honors at the Doc Hale Virginia Tech Elite, also set a new school record. He broke Andre Black's record of 16.29m/53-5.50 set at the 2007 NCAA Championships. Williams has won the event twice this season and has won this event at total of six times in his two seasons with the Cardinals.
