Stiefelmeyer Reclaims No. 1 Singles Ranking
March 10, 2015 | Men's Tennis
The University of Louisville's Sebastian Stiefelmeyer is currently the nation's top-ranked player in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings released on March 10.
The senior from Vienna, Austria currently holds a 29-3 overall record in singles and is 11-0 in dual matches as the Cards' No. 1 player in the 2015 season. He became Louisville's first player to earn the No. 1 ranking on Jan. 6, 2015 when he debuted there in the ITA's preseason rankings. After remaining in the top five in the subsequent two ranking periods, he reclaimed the No. 1 spot this week.
In the 2014-15 fall season, he became the first Louisville player to win the ITA All-American Singles Championship. He entered that tournament at No. 110 in the preseason rankings and won nine straight matches, six of those wins came against players ranked ahead of him. Stiefelmeyer also won his division at the Duke Invitational, was a finalist at the Virginia Ranked +1 Invitational and reached the second round of the National Indoor Championship.
The three-time all-conference selection has appeared in the national rankings in each of his seasons at Louisville.
"Sebastian has been undefeated through the first half of the team dual match season," said UofL head coach Rex Ecarma. "Only tennis legend, Michael Mather, has done this. People need to know that he is also an amazing student with a difficult major. He is a great friend to his teammates and I could not ask for a better player leader.
The Cardinals (13-3) jumped five spots to No. 28 in the ITA team rankings while senior Albert Wagner is now 106 in singles.
"Our depth has helped us get to a 13-3 record with four wins against teams in the national rankings this week," said Ecarma. "This is a total team effort."
Louisville will travel to North Carolina to face No. 37 NC State Friday and No. 19 Wake Forest Sunday.
