Louisville 15 - Georgia Tech 2Â
"We're really excited to get a three-game sweep," said UofL head coach Sandy Pearsall. "We jumped right on them and took advantage of our opportunities. They were struggling to find the zone and we took advantage of that. We didn't press and took walks when we had them and had some great timely hitting. Our pitching also did a great job for us today."
The Cardinals (8-5, 3-0 ACC) jumped to a 1-0 lead in the first. Whitney Arion led off the game with a walk, stole second and took third on a passed ball. One out later, Kelsi Jones walked and stole second. Hailey Smith earned a walk to load the bases. A wild pitch sent Arion home to put Louisville on the board.
Louisville tacked on a four more runs in the second. Walks to Brittany Sims, Arion and Jones loaded the bases for Smith's two-out, two-run single. Becker followed with a two-run hit bringing the score to 5-0.
The Yellow Jackets (7-10, 0-3) got a run back in the home half of the second when Maddie Lionberger drew a one-out walk, took second on a sacrifice bunt by Kelsey Chisolm and came home on an RBI single by Karly Fullem.
The Cardinals quickly pushed their lead back to five runs in the third when Sims powered her second home run of the season over the left field wall to make the score 6-1.
Georgia Tech struck again in the bottom of the fourth when Courtney Ziese connected on a one-out solo home run to make the score 6-2.
Louisville answered with a pair of runs in the fifth. Maryssa Becker delivered a leadoff double and Nicole Pufahl followed with a walk. Both runners advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Kristina Dillard and came home on a hit by Sydney Benz to increase the lead to 8-2.
The Cards used two walks and four hits - including a pair of three-run homers by Becker and Arion - to put up a seven-spot in the sixth. Kayla Soles led off with a single and scored on a double by Jones. After a walk to Smith, Becker connected on her team-best fourth home run of the season. A hit by Pufahl and a walk issued to Benz set up Arion's third home run of the season to cap the scoring at 15-2.
Madi Norman (3-4) got the win, allowing two earned runs on two hits and striking out five in 3.2 innings of work. Becker held the Yellow Jackets scoreless and surrendered one hit while striking out four in 2.1 innings of relief.
