LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The No. 29 University of Louisville women's golf team opens its spring season this weekend, and the program isn't waiting long for a measuring stick.
The Cardinals travel to the UCF Challenge, participating in the event from Sunday through Tuesday, and face 16 teams that qualified for the NCAA Championship a season ago. The three-day event will be held at the Eagle Creek Golf Club in Orlando, Fla.
In addition to host No. 21 UCF, the field includes No. 14 Vanderbilt, No. 17 Virginia, Miami (Fla.), Minnesota, and Wisconsin. Live results will be available through BirdieFire.com.
Though Louisville has been out of season since mid-October, the Cardinals have been continually practicing for their third spring campaign under head coach Courtney Trimble.
“We've been fortunate to take two training trips to Florida to get prepared,” the 2014 AAC Coach of the Year said. “We played five rounds of golf there, and the weather has been mild here, so we've been able to get on the course the last couple of days.
“We stay competitive indoors with drills, and most of the team played in tournaments over winter break.”
Louisville will utilize a starting lineup of Katie Mitchell, Louise Oxner, Shannon Gramley, Emily Haas, and Laura Restrepo.
In 14 rounds of play during the fall, Haas paced the Cardinals with a 74.00 average. She had four rounds in which she completed even or below par and had three top-10 finishes in five events. Restrepo had the second-best average (74.14) on the team and compiled a team-best five rounds even or below par. Mitchell rounded out the top three scorers, producing a 75.29 average and three top-10 finishes.
Collectively, Louisville produced two team titles and two additional top-five finishes in the fall.
“We had a good fall, but we felt like we could've been a lot better,” Trimble said. “The difference this year is we have true depth, so this spring we expect to have a variety of lineups. Having the depth will be really helpful, and I believe this entire group is ready to achieve some things that we haven't done yet.”
