LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The No. 38 University of Louisville men's tennis team grabbed its second win of the day with a 5-0 victory over No. 36 Indiana. Louisville (10-2) had defeated Toledo 4-0 in the first match of Wednesday's doubleheader. The Hoosiers, who had also picked up a win over Toledo, drop to 7-3 on the season.
"Every time we play Indiana, it's so tough because no one wants to lose," said UofL head coach Rex Ecarma. "Their guys are really physical and fit, they're from a great conference - and with us being close in proximity - we have a lot of mutual respect."
The teams played a highly competitive doubles point which came down to the No. 1 spot. Alex Gornet and Jeffrey Brown gave the Cards an early advantage with a 6-1 win over Chris Essick and Stefan Lugonjic at the No. 2 spot. At the No. 3 seed, Indiana's Manji Raheel and Sven Lalic fired back with a 6-2 victory over Albert Wagner and Chris Simich. Sebastian Stiefelmeyer and Van Damrongsri battled against Sam Monette and Daniel Bednarczyk at the No. 1 spot after being down 3-0. The duo rallied to tie the contest at 6-6 tie and prevailed in a 7-3 tiebreaker to secure the first point of the match.
Taking a 1-0 lead into singles play, Louisville grabbed the next three points on courts 2, 3 and 4 to get the win. At the No. 2 spot, Wagner increased the lead with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Daniel Bednarczyk. At the top seed, Stiefelmeyer, the No. 5 singles player in the nation, battled back from an early 3-1 deficit to beat Monette 7-6 after winning a 10-8 tiebreaker in the first set. He went on to cruise to a 6-0 victory in the second set. Gornet would clinch the match for Louisville at the No. 3 spot with a 6-2, 6-2 win against Manji Raheel. Moments later, Luis Elizondo registered an additional point for the Cards by defeating Stefan Lugonjic 6-3, 7-5 at No. 6.
The Cards move their win streak to eight matches while head coach Rex Ecarma now has 395 career victories.
UofL returns to action Saturday when they take on Green Bay at 12 p.m. and IUPUI at 6 p.m. in a doubleheader at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
