Cortnee Daley and Faye Brust both scored four goals apiece to lead the No. 13 University of Louisville women's lacrosse team to a 15-3 victory over visiting Canisius on a cold and rainy day at the UofL Lacrosse Stadium.
"We had a remarkable second half," said head coach Kellie Young. "They made the changes we asked them to make and started executing on our shots. I give a lot of credit to our defense, that's an impressive day to keep them to three goals and we know that two of them were off of simple mistakes, so I'm very proud of them. "
Daley started the scoring off for Louisville (2-0), notching two goals in the first 12 minutes of play. Kaylin Morissette added another score to put the Cards up 3-0 at the 17:28 mark with an assist by Brust.
Canisius (0-3) got on the board in the 18th minute of play when Tori Quinn scored off of a free position shot, but Hannah Koloski put the Cards up 4-1 just under four minutes later. Goals from Quinn and Taylor Giglio pulled the Griffins within one, but Brust scored with an assist from Daley with 1:37 left in the half to put the Cards up 5-3 at the half.
Louisville outshot Canisius 17-10 in the first half of play and held an 8-1 draw control advantage. Ashley Peacock recorded four saves in goal for the Cards, while Rebecca VanLaeken stopped six shots for Canisius.
"The first half was just tight," said Young. "I don't know if it was the rain that they were concerned about, but when the first few shots weren't falling, we just got tight and a little nervous. In the second half you could see our shots were more powerful. We were more fluid, kids started taking their one-on-ones, which is what we do, and we're better when we're moving."
The Cards came out strong in the second half, scoring four straight goals in the opening seven minutes of play. Heidi Smith scored her first career goal just 2:06 into the half to start the second half scoring. Less than a minute later, Daley scored her third goal of the game to put the Cards up 7-3. Morissette scored her second goal of the day with 25:59 remaining in the game before Brust added her second score just over two minutes later, assisted by Morissette. With the goal, Brust became the sixth player in program history to score 100 goals for the Cardinals.
Koloski kept the scoring up for the Cards, notching her second score of the match and eighth of the season with just over 13 minutes remaining in the contest. Brust then scored her third and fourth goals of the game within a minute to put the Cards up 12-3. Kelli Gerding had the assist on both of Brust's goals.
Daley scored her fourth goal of the contest with just over three minutes remaining to extend the Cards' lead to 10 goals. Koloski and Morissette both scored the third goals of the game within 15 seconds of one another to end the scoring for the game.
The Cards held Canisius scoreless in the second half and outshot the Griffins 42-20. Peacock recorded the win for Lousville and stopped 10 shots, while VanLaeken finished the game with 14 saves for Canisius.
The Cardinals return to action next Saturday, Feb. 28 when they travel to Colorado to take on No. 18 Denver.
NOTE: With her goal at the 28:23 mark in the first half, senior Faye Brust became the sixth player in program history to score 100 goals for the Cardinals.
