
Lacrosse Defeats Cincinnati 17-8 in Season Opener

Louisville, Ky. - Hannah Koloski scored a career-high six goals to lead the 13th ranked University of Louisville women's lacrosse team to a 17-8 win over Cincinnati on a chilly Sunday afternoon at the UofL Lacrosse Stadium. Cortnee Daley finished with five goals and one assist for the Cardinals. Courtney Curtis led Cincinnati (0-2) with three goals.
"I am excited about the win," said head coach Kellie Young. "Cincinnati has improved a great deal since last year. We have a young starting lineup and I am excited about the win. We still have some things we need to clean up, we have some things to work on defense and some stuff on offense. It was exactly what we needed today."
Louisville (1-0) jumped out to a 2-0 lead to start the game, while dominating time of possession for the span of the contest. The Cardinals finished with a 20-6 advantage on the draw, while limiting the Bearcats to just 12 shots in 60 minutes of action.
Kaylin Morissette finished with 14 draw control, tying the school record that she set last season against Cincinnati as well. Koloski and Morissette scored two quick goals to give the Cardinals a 2-0 lead to start the game. Cincinnati responded with a goal five minutes later. Again the Cardinals scored two goals in quick succession with one by Daley and then Koloski.
Cincinnati cut the lead to 4-2 with a goal by Megan Bell in the 11th minute and the Cards responded with three straight goals. Koloski, Cat Gordon and Daley put the Cardinals up 7-2 with just under two minutes in the half. The Bearcats took advantage of the Cardinals being a man down and scored in the final minute to cut the lead to 7-3.
In the first half, Louisville showed its strength on the draw by winning possession on 7 of the 11 occasions. The Cardinals finished with a 28-5 shot advantage and collected 12 ground balls.
The Cardinals came out strong in the second half, scoring four straight goals in a two minute span. Once again Koloski jump started the offense scoring the first two goals of the half. Morissette scored her second goal of the game while Faye Brust got on the board with the fourth goal for an 11-3 Louisville lead.
The Bearcats responded by scoring three straight goals to cut the Cardinal lead to 11-6 with just over 13 minutes remaining. Brust pushed the Cardinals lead with a goal and Daley scored on a free position shot to push the lead to 13-6. Cincinnati scored on a free position shot in the seventh minute.
Louisville continued to dominate play and scored four straight goals in the span of three minutes to take a commanding 17-7 lead with two minutes left to play. Daley scored two goals, Koloski scored one and Gordon added another during the flurry. The Bearcats scored with five seconds remaining to cut the deficit to 17-8.
Defensively, the Cardinals forced 20 turnovers, while Stephanie McNamara and Koloski each finished with two. Both goalkeepers Ashley Peacock and Brittany Read saw action. Peacock finished with one save and the win.
The Cardinals return to action on Saturday, Feb. 21 as they host Canisius at the University of Louisville Lacrosse Stadium at 1:00 p.m.
