
Cardinals Fall 1-0 at No. 2 Virginia

Cardinals play a tough match but fall to Cavaliers
CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA. - The University of Louisville women's soccer team fell 1-0 to No. 2 Virginia on Thursday evening at Klöckner Stadium. The game was the first of three consecutive road games to end the season.Â
The Cardinals had some chances early in the first half. Sophomore Alison Price's shot in the sixth minute hit the post and bounced back out into the field of play. In the 18th minute, freshman Gabrielle Vincent bent a free kick into the upper left corner but Virginia's Morgan Stearns was able to deflect the shot over the net.
Virginia's best chance of the first half came in the 21st minute but junior goalkeeper Taylor Bucklin made the save. Neither team was able to put another shot on goal, ending the half scoreless.Â
The Cavaliers held a 9-3 shot advantage and a 7-1 corner kick advantage. Both keepers finished with one save apiece.
Virginia continued to get opportunities through the early stages of the second half.  Louisville had its best opportunity in the 68th minute off a free kick from sophomore Inger Katrine Bjerke but the shot sailed high.Â
Five minutes later the Cavaliers were awarded a corner kick and scored off a header to go up 1-0. Virginia's Alexis Shaffer jumped over a Louisville defender to put the ball in the upper corner of the far post over the hands of Bucklin.

The Cardinal offense applied pressure but were unable to convert for the equalizer. Virginia finished the match with a 19-6 shot advantage and a 9-3 corner kick advantage. Bucklin finished the match with five saves while Stearns finished with one.Â
The Cardinals (7-7-2, 3-4-1 ACC) will be back in action on Sunday, Oct. 22 as they travel to NC State for a  at 1:00 p.m.Â
